Testing the black-and-white shooting mode

in GEMS5 years ago (edited)

I did a little test today. I am ready to share the result if anyone is interested.

The question was, in what mode is it better to shoot, if you want to get a black-and-white photo in the end?

  1. shooting in standard color mode with Lightroom processing (RAW f. 1)
  2. shooting in black-and-white camera mode (RAW f. 4)
  3. shooting in black-and-white camera mode (Jpeg f. 3)

The test was conducted in a room with natural light from a window. I took multicolored objects (abstractions) as my object. The camera settings didn't change: ISO100, f/9, 5800k, 2 sec.

The first image was taken in standard RAW mode.

For comparison, the color Jpeg option. It is expected to be more saturated and contrasting.

If I shoot in CB mode and RAW format, the camera adds additional information to the raw data. They're not so raw, either.
Apparently this is the camera's profile information at the time of shooting.
For example, the translation option to "grayscale" from normal and black & white shooting modes in RAW format.
Changes can be made manually during the processing of a frame in Lythrum (or other editor).
I will use CB shooting mode to search for a frame in the viewfinder and shoot in RAW format. Here you can put a stop to it and finally calm down.

And more. For regular reportage shooting and posting to the network, it is enough to use the black mode in RAW format. Photo-editors usually cocout any excellent result is obtained... as it happened.
But for my soul, I keep RAW with a CB viewfinder.
