Good afternoon friends, it is a pleasure to greet you again.
Today, continuing with my arduous but satisfactory work of bringing knowledge about cocoa management to cocoa producing families, I exchanged knowledge with them about a simple but essential technique to achieve a good harvest, we are talking about pruning in cocoa.
Iniciamos con una serie de preguntas sobre el tema y muchos respondieron en lenguaje coloquial lo que es la poda, ya que ellos tienen conocimientos ancestrales que se transmiten de generación en generación. Luego en lenguaje Técnico,pero sencillo les dije lo que es la poda, observando similitud entre ambos vocabulario.
We began with a series of questions on the subject and many answered in colloquial language what pruning is, since they have ancestral knowledge that is transmitted from generation to generation. Then in technical language, but simple, I told them what pruning is, observing similarities between both vocabulary.
Desarrollado el tema vimos que el Cacao necesita o requiere de 4 tipos de Poda a lo largo de su vida productiva. Siendo estas:
a) Poda de Formación,la cual se aplica a los 6 meses de edad o al momento que forma su verticilo (estructura de ramas principales!) de las cuales se seleccionan 3 o 4 dandole una estructura equilibrada a la planta.
b) Poda de mantenimiento, se realiza durante toda la vida de la planta, eliminando ramas dañadas y mal orientada, tratando de mantener la forma que le dimos a los 6 meses.
c) Poda Fitosanitaria; como su nombre lo dice, se aplica para mantener la planta libre de plagas y enfermedades y como consecuencia una producción y productividad más sana.
d) Poda de Rehabilitación, está se aplica a aquellas plantas que no han sido manejadas, fueron abandonadas, presentan ataques de plagas, enfermedades, exceso de altura, tallos multiples y una producción casi nula.
Having developed the topic, we saw that cocoa needs or requires 4 types of pruning throughout its productive life. These are
a) Formation pruning, which is applied at 6 months of age or at the moment it forms its whorl (main branch structure!) of which 3 or 4 are selected to give a balanced structure to the plant.
b) Maintenance pruning, is done throughout the life of the plant, eliminating damaged branches and poorly oriented, trying to maintain the shape that we gave at 6 months.
c) Phytosanitary pruning; as its name says, it is applied to keep the plant free of pests and diseases and as a consequence a healthier production and productivity.
d) Rehabilitation pruning; this is applied to those plants that have not been managed, were abandoned, have pest attacks, diseases, excess height, multiple stems and almost null production.
Al finalizar la actividad, llegamos al siguiente concepto de poda.
PODA: Es la actividad aplicada al cultivo con la finalidad de darle a la planta una arquitecta deseada, definir el área de producción y condiciones fitosanitarias óptimas para lograr una producción y productividad por hectárea/año y por ende mayor ingreso, lo que se reflejaria en un mejor nivel de vida de la familia.
Por último fuimos a la práctica en la finca de una de las productoras.
At the end of the activity, we arrive at the following concept of pruning.
PRUNING: It is the activity applied to the crop in order to give the plant a desired architecture, define the production area and optimal phytosanitary conditions to achieve production and productivity per hectare/year and therefore higher income, which would be reflected in a better standard of living for the family.
Finally, we went to the farm of one of the producers.
