What convinced you to stop using Facebook and other similar platforms?

in GEMS4 years ago

If you have deactivated and/or eventually deleted your facebook account after using the platform for a while sharing your personally identifiable information or perhaps even anonymously, what made you stop using it. Did you manage to stay off it so far or something made you log back in after a period of absence?

I mean there are a number of reasons; privacy issues, data mining, manipulation of our behaviours, psychological strain and im sure the list of negative impact can go on. The algos used keeps evolving to bring users back and keep them addicted to platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok and others anytime they decide to leave.

Documentaries like The Social Dilemma are a good explainer to the extent of the impact of these platforms in our lives. If you are unaware of the impact of this tech then maybe its worth looking into first. Does the few positive use cases for these platforms justify their larger direct and indirect impact?

If you managed to escape the clutches of these platforms, how did you do it?

I realised Facebook was manipulating me into fighting with my “friends” and causing people to behave in an uncivilised fashion that they would never do in person.

Facebook makes money by increasing engagement by encouraging trolling.

Yes! That is an extremely valid point which I too have observed in my own life and those of people near to me.

I also watched it this weekend and even though I work on these platforms I forget how sinister the use of them can be

I don’t use it for my private life and hardly login but I still have the accounts since they added to business profiles I manage! Apart from youtube I don’t get much value from social media

Yeah same. I have a curated YouTube so little to no junk makes its way through to my feed there. Same for Twitter. I'm going to watch the social dilemma another time just to make sure I don't get the urge to go back on FB anytime soon. 😂

Useless promotional content helped me to get out of Facebook

Posted using Dapplr

I know right! I was sick of the tons of useless notifications and ads for one...

I quit using Facebook in 2016 for active use. Only kept my account for business purposes. I really just dislike what social media has become. Hive is different, you can actually find some great value here, although there is still some garbage, just not near as much because the community don’t play that, lol.

I totally agree with you!!

I have not used Facebook since long - just because I have lost interest after joining steem / hive. I don't feel, it adds a lot of value. May be those who are always after likes, are more on these platforms.

Yeah I get that. I think I enjoy these platforms more than something as crazy as Facebook with so much trash and promotional BS on it.

Stopped using it about 8 years ago I think. My friends were dumb and added their family members as "friends" and then it just became stupid and not fun anymore.

Wise choice man. Saved yourself a ton of precious time there!

Because want try other

I stopped with fb when it asked to me to send a copy of my identity card.

Hey brother, was wondering if you checked out https://ecency.com? We rebranded from Esteem and Ecency and there is no beneficiary fees anymore, we launched fully functional website, mobile app improved as well as working on desktop app update... Just thought to drop a note about that, also hope your family is doing well in these lockdown times. 🙏🙌

Yeah! That is a major concern and I like how you worded it!
