Aquí estoy, lista para ser una abejita nuevamente.

Como les he comentado en alguna que otra ocasión, soy estudiante de medicina en Venezuela. Si bien es una carrera llena de sacrificios y dificultades, también está llena de gratificación y buenos momentos, por ese motivo, el día de hoy vengo a contarles un poco sobre mi experiencia, en lo que, a mi parecer, ha sido una de las rotaciones más humanas y dulces que he tenido el placer de experimentar: Pediatría.

As I have told you on other occasions, I am a medical student in Venezuela. Although it is a career full of sacrifices and difficulties, it is also full of gratification and good times, for that reason, today I come to tell you a little about my experience, in what, in my opinion, has been one of the most humane and sweetest rotations I have had the pleasure of experiencing: Pediatrics.

Asumo que la mayoría de nosotros a escuchado eso de que pediatría es un mundo aparte, que los pacientes no deben ser tratados como adultos, que ellos son diferentes y especiales. Y créanme, es verdad. Con ellos aprendes a hacer la "Pinky Promise", a examinar a un osito de peluche que también está enfermo, aprendes que un besito en la frente y un abrazo pueden hacer más que cualquier medicina.

Con esto, no quiero decir que son unos santos, o que no sufrí con algún que otro pacientito que le tiene miedo a los doctores, también me gritaron, me hicieron llorar y me lastimaron, me hicieron tener voluntad de hierro, pero también me ablandaron el corazón de una forma que no esperaba. Realmente nunca fui fan del área pediátrica, pero la experiencia fue tan bonita, que lo repetiría una y mil veces.

I assume that most of us have heard that pediatrics is a world apart, that patients should not be treated like adults, that they are different and special. And believe me, it's true.
With them you learn to do the "Pinky Promise", to examine a teddy bear who is also sick, you learn that a kiss on the forehead and a hug can do more than any medicine.

By this, I don't mean that they are saints, or that I didn't suffer with some little patient who is afraid of doctors, they also yelled at me, made me cry and hurt me, made me have an iron will, but they also softened my heart in a way I didn't expect. I was never really a fan of the pediatric area, but the experience was so nice, I would repeat it a thousand times.

Ahora sí, puedo comenzar con mi relato, tuve el placer de hacer la rotación de pediatría en el "Hospital Guaraguao" durante los primeros meses del año, junto a un pequeño grupo de mis compañeros, bajo la esperanza de que la rotación terminaría rápido y no tendríamos grandes problemas (todo esto dado que a ninguno de nosotros le llamaba la atención ese servicio). Pero teníamos la disposición para ayudar y aprender tanto como pudiéramos. Algo gracioso es que a tan solo una semana de nuestra llegada, una de nuestras profesoras estuvo de cumpleaños y decidimos celebrarselo como muestra de agradecimiento y cariño. Y así, básicamente fue como comenzamos pediatría, con vibras bonitas que se mantuvieron durante toda la rotación y aún sostenemos.

Now I can start with my story, I had the pleasure of doing the pediatric rotation at the "Hospital Guaraguao" during the first months of the year, together with a small group of my colleagues, under the hope that the rotation would be over quickly and we would not have big problems (all this since none of us were interested in that service). But we were willing to help and learn as much as we could. A funny thing is that just a week after our arrival, one of our teachers had a birthday and we decided to celebrate it as a token of our appreciation and affection. And that's basically how we started pediatrics, with nice vibes that lasted throughout the rotation and still do.

La foto que verán abajo es la de nuestra primera guardia en el servicio, estábamos emocionadas, listas para cuidar a esos niños y para hacerlos reír un poquito en el proceso. Ese día pesamos, medimos, calculamos dosis y aprendimos varias cositas sobre la atención pediátrica que se quedarán conmigo de aquí hasta que me gradue y puede que un poquito más allá también. Ese día tuvimos un caso especial y muy triste, de un niño en desnutrición extrema, cuya madre al ser menor de edad, no tenía los recursos ni sabía de los cuidados básicos de un bebé, a ese chiquito lo internamos, para poder monitorear su avance y para enseñarle a su madre un poco de los cuidados necesarios.

The picture you will see below is of our first shift on the service, we were excited, ready to take care of those kids and to make them laugh a little in the process. That day we weighed, measured, calculated doses and learned several little things about pediatric care that will stay with me from here until I graduate and maybe a little bit beyond as well. That day we had a special and very sad case, of a child in extreme malnutrition, whose mother, being a minor, did not have the resources nor knew the basic care of a baby, we hospitalized that little boy, in order to monitor his progress and to teach his mother a little of the necessary care.

Otro momento resaltante de nuestra rotación fue la fecha de Carnaval, donde nos reunimos para repartir algunos dulces y máscaras alusivas a la festividad, con el fin de darle a estos niños y a su padres un poco de alegría a pesar de las situaciones tan precarias, sé que muchos no lo entenderán, sé que puede verse como una burla, que ante una enfermedad nosotros lleguemos con dulces, música y máscaras, pero la verdad es que, soy creyente (y muchos medicos posiblemente también) de que la salud comienza en el alma, comienza con pensamientos positivos y con amor. Y eso es lo que buscarmos inspirar en nuestros pacientes.

Another highlight of our rotation was the date of Carnival, where we gathered to distribute some candy and masks alluding to the holiday, in order to give these children and their parents a little joy despite the precarious situations, I know that many will not understand, I know it can be seen as a mockery, that before an illness we come with candy, music and masks, but the truth is that I am a believer (and many doctors probably also) that health begins in the soul, begins with positive thoughts and love. And that is what we seek to inspire in our patients.

Pediatría es un lugar lleno de cariño, promesas y magia, un lugar donde papis, mamis, doctores, juguetes, peluches y niños, convergen de una forma tan bonita que se disfruta aunque no lo quieras. Pediatría fue que se me llenaran los ojos de lágrimas y al mismo tiempo ser fuerte porque ese niño o bebé confía en ti. Fue darle un abrazo a esa mamá que está desesperada y fue bailar la conga de los animales para que un chiquito se riera a pesar de su dolor. Sin duda estás materias que te hacen sentir humano, son las materias que más valen la pena. Sin más que agregar, gracias por llegar hasta aqui.

We have many more stories to tell, but I don't want to overload this post. Pediatrics is a place full of love, promises and magic, a place where daddies, mommies, doctors, toys, stuffed animals and children converge in such a beautiful way that you enjoy it even if you don't want to. Pediatrics was to fill my eyes with tears and at the same time to be strong because that child or baby trusts you. It was giving a hug to that mom who is desperate and it was dancing the animal conga for a little one to laugh in spite of his pain. Undoubtedly these subjects that make you feel human are the most worthwhile subjects. Without further ado, thank you for making it this far.
