En el post de hoy les contaré de un acto benéfico en el que tuve el honor de ser organizador, y sin duda me dejó marcado. Como ya había comentado en mi anterior post, yo era presidente escolar, y en una conversación con el asistente social del colegio, surgió la iniciativa de hacer una donación a una casa de abuelitos (lugar donde cuidan a personas mayores) y de paso ir con un grupo de alumnos y hacerles pasar un dia diferente. Tomó algo de tiempo gestionar los permisos, pero finalmente estaba todo organizado.
In today's post I'll tell you about a charity event that I had the honor of organizing, and it certainly left a mark on me. As I had already mentioned in my previous post, I was the school president, and in a conversation with the school's social worker, the initiative came up to make a donation to a grandparents' house (a place where they take care of elderly people). While I was there, I went with a group of students and made them spend a different day; it took some time to arrange the permits, but finally everything was organized.
Las preparaciones para llevar a cabo la visita fueron relativamente sencillas, había que reunir un grupo de alumnos que quisieran participar, pero existía un requisito particular que nos habían mencionado con anterioridad y que me llamaba mucho la atención, tenían que ir personas que no fueran extremadamente sensibles o sentimentales, cuestión que si bien intuía el porqué, no me parecía algo tan determinante. Todas las preparaciones siguieron acorde al plan, se compraron las cosas para aportar a la fundación a la que íbamos a ir, en total fueron unos 200 dólares aproximadamente en productos de higiene personal.
The preparations to carry out the visit were relatively simple, to gather a group of students who wanted to participate, and there was a particular requirement that had been mentioned before and that attracted my attention a lot, they had to go people who were not extremely sensitive or sentimental, a question that although I could sense why, it did not seem to me something so decisive. Llegó el dia, y nos reunimos todos, preparamos las cajas, subimos todo la Van (camioneta) que nos llevaría hasta la fundación, empezamos el trayecto, todos estábamos super motivados e intrigados porque no sabíamos con que nos encontraríamos, al cabo de unos 15 o 20 minutos de viaje en auto llegamos al lugar, nos recibieron unas personas muy amables y nos dieron unas instrucciones que no recuerdo muy bien; han pasado ya dos años desde esa visita, pero recuerdo que nos comentaron que teníamos que ser muy sutiles con todo lo que dijéramos, y comprender a los abuelitos todo el tiempo.
The day arrived, and we all got together, prepared the boxes, loaded the van that would take us to the foundation, and began the journey. We were all very motivated and intrigued because we did not know what we would find, We were received by some very nice people and they gave us some instructions that I do not remember very well, it has been two years since that visit, but I remember that they told us that we had to be very subtle with everything we said, and understand the grandparents all the time.
Finalmente luego de la charla entramos al lugar, y fue una mezcla indescriptible de sensaciones, habían muchos abuelitos, cada uno con una historia diferente, condiciones de salud diferente, diferentes enfermedades y sobretodo, diferentes estados de ánimo y actitudes. Fue un choque demasiado fuerte encontrarse rodeado por la viva imagen del paso del tiempo, fue abrumador, y a medida que fuimos conversando con ellos, nos dimos cuenta de muchas cosas; el primer consejo que todos recibimos directa o indirectamente fue, aprovechen la juventud, es un bien sagrado que con el tiempo se va deteriorando y modifica el vivir de cada uno, repito, el tiempo no se detiene nunca.
Finally after the talk we entered the place, and it was an indescribable mixture of sensations, there were many grandparents, each with a different history, different health conditions, different diseases and above all, different moods and attitudes. It was too much of a shock to be surrounded by the living image of the passing of time, it was overwhelming, and as we talked with the grandparents who were there we realized many things, the first advice we all received directly or indirectly was, take advantage of your youth, in a sacred good that with time is deteriorating and modifies the life of each one, I repeat, time never stops.
Otra cosa que todos pudimos notar, es que el tiempo, si bien pasa para todos por igual, nos afecta de manera diferente. Pudimos ver claramente cómo el estilo de vida es determinante para nuestra vejez. También fue muy duro encontrarnos con abuelitos con condiciones de salud complicadas, donde cada día que despiertan, es un milagro, yo diría que es la experiencia mas cercana que he tenido con la muerte, verla de tan cerca, definitivamente eso te hace reflexionar mucho.
Another thing that we all noticed is that time, although it passes equally for all of us, affects us in different ways. We could clearly see how the lifestyle is a determining factor for our old age. It was also very hard to meet with grandparents with complicated health conditions, where every day they wake up, is a miracle, I would say that is the closest experience I have had with death, see it so close, definitely that makes you think a lot.
En este punto ya entendía el por qué pedían voluntarios fuertes en el sentido anímico, pero una vez ahí no teníamos nada más que hacer, que guardar todos los sentimientos tristes o negativos que tuviéramos y dedicarnos a repartir alegría y esperanza. Nos dimos cuenta que muchos abuelitos se alegraron con nuestra simple presencia, y muchos de ellos solo necesitaban de una conversación para sonreír y recordar buenos momentos, fue realmente gratificante poder escuchar todas sus historias, consejos, anécdotas y chistes, tuvimos la oportunidad de presentarles coreografías, jugar a las cartas, ajedrez, dominó, entre muchas otras actividades, fue realmente maravilloso.
At this point, I understood why they were asking for strong volunteers in the sense of the soul, but once there, we had nothing else to do but keep all the sad or negative feelings we had, and dedicate ourselves to spreading joy and hope. We realized that many grandparents were happy with our simple presence, and many of them just needed a conversation to smile and remember good times, it was really rewarding to be able to listen to all their stories, advice, anecdotes and jokes, we had the opportunity to present them with choreographies, play cards, chess, dominoes, among many other activities, it was really wonderful.
Transcurrió el dia con normalidad, y después de muchas historias, conversaciones y juegos nos tocó decir adiós, ninguno de nosotros queríamos irnos, nos encariñamos muchísimo con todos los abuelitos, cuando subimos a la Van (camioneta) que nos iba a retornar al colegio, muchos alumnos no pudieron contenerse más y soltaron el llanto, repito, no fue una experiencia sencilla de manejar, pero sin dudas, todos salimos con un aprendizaje de ese lugar, y con la promesa de que volveríamos, porque a pesar de lo duro que pueda ser estar inmerso en el constante del paso del tiempo, no hay mejor sensación que poder llevar alegría y sonrisas a quienes mas lo necesitan.
