I can't believe I still have a backlog of my Sibu's trip which I had not journalled. I would love to pen down all for memories' sake because the opportunity for us to fly back to my hometown was a rare opportunity. Should I say — a gem experience.
So, in the beginning of June, when I flew back to Sibu, my hometown, I told my mum I wanted to visit all the mall here since I knew they would look different from the malls where I stay. I am from Kuala Lumpur, the main city in my country, Malaysia. Therefore, you could imagine big malls with classy standard, luxury feeling. The malls at Sibu are very different. All I wanted was to experience what my parents experienced daily.
To Medan Mall
Sibu town had changed a lot until I could not find recognise the roads anymore. I was on the look out with camera ready to take photo. Then, out of a sudden when my mum was driving, she said, "There, Medan Mall is there. I am going to make a U-turn then we reached." Hence, you notice the photos below as such.
Sibu has a lot of hypermarkets and this is one of them. It seems that people prefer to go hypermarket where one can buy everything under one roof. As far as I knew my parents were — went to a place, to buy everything, to eat and then go home.
Okay, back to mum's driving. She made a U-turn and I got to captured all these before we went into underground car park. Sorry guys, I took from inside the car, seriously not the angle and photographs I liked.
We were going there to buy lunch and then I also wanted to visit a biscuit shop to try out the biscuits. If nice, I would buy some back to KL.
The ground floor consisted of many kiosk style of shops, selling all sort of stuffs from house items to medicines to skincare to toys and cheap clothes, to biscuits and to cooking stuffs and kitchen utensils. Apparently, you could negotiate the price too. It was a tad noisy.
At first floor would be Medan Mall's supermarket and departmental store. We did not enter these two because we wanted to head to Thompson Corner to buy lunch.
Thomson Corner
This is a small coffee shop in the mall where usually customers would come to eat after they shopped. According to my mum, most of the time, it was packed. Also, it wasn't a big area so one would not expect that it could sit 50-70 people.
It was not that crowded when we went due to we reached super early, way before lunch time. We approached the counter to order our food for take-away. Just a simple menu on the signage area as well as a simple laminated paper menu.
We ordered 'Rojak' which is our local salad of mixed vegetables, fruits, and dough fritters that is covered in a sticky black sweet sauce and garnished with chopped peanuts. We also ordered fried chicken rice pattaya whereby fried rice was wrapped with thin omelette and served with their signature fried chicken.
Took a group photo while we were waiting for the food.
Biscuit Shop
Next stop was this famous biscuit shop where I wanted to hunt for food souvenirs. It had so many varieties of biscuits but I only wanted to find Sibu famous milk biscuits and Sibu Heong Peah and Sibu Kompia. The lady recommended me Kompia with filling, I bought some for trying before I decided to buy bulk.
While I was at the biscuits shop making enquiries of different biscuits, my mom brought Jansen to the side of the corner where toys were sold. And when I reunited back with them, my mom had bought a toy for him.
We went home to have our lunch. Rojak for the parents and I shared the fried rice pattaya with Jansen while my husband and my eldest son wanted to try the instant noodle they bought from another supermarket the day before.
Jansen was definitely happy with his new toys. So many Ultramans. And a photo of him and my father because so happen they sat the same way.
Hope one day I can fly back to Sibu again. Such a small town and super peaceful and friendly people around.

Nice post. I have not been to Sibu in many years. I was born here, though at the old Lau King Howe Hospital. It's a memorial museum now.
Wow. I didn't know that. So we both have Sibu background. I was not born there, but I grew up there from 1yo till 19 years old. So Sibu IS my home. Oh yes, the hospital. Now I baru know it is a memorial museum. Sibu changes alot.
Yup. My family stayed in Sibu until I was 2 years old and we relocated elsewhere. I have no memories of the town.
Amazing post. The Medan Mall looks great and those snacks looks delicious.
