Coconut: The Tree of Life

in GEMS5 years ago

(Coco Nucifera) - a type of palm tree which has two general classifications. The tall palm which starts flowering five years after planting depending on the condition of the soil and lives up to 60-80 years It has a height of 49 feet or more. . The dwarf coconut which has a height of 25-30 feet begins to flower after three years. Its life span is shorter than the tall one. The dwarf type can be seen in some home gardens and parks because it doesn't occupy too much space and enhances the place too. On the other hand, the hybrid coconut is the crosses between the tall and dwarf coconut. This one is resistant to pests and yields more nuts.

Coconut tree is called the "Tree of Life" because of the numerous products derived from every part of the palm. It can provide everything that we need. From the leaves to its roots, almost all parts of the tree can be used- food, shelter, fuel, decors, building and cleaning materials, bags, wallets, sewing and kitchen equipment, musical instruments, wine, beverages, cosmetics, handicrafts, furniture, gardening purposes, and medicine.

The most useful ingredient inside a coconut is the coconut oil. It's extracted from copra and known for its anti- microbial properties. A new highly version of coconut oil is Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO). VCO help fights common cold and boosts immune system, blood cell counts improves and can help beats viruses. There's an on-going research regarding the possible benefits of VCO if given to patients of Covid-19.

By the way, another important ingredient inside a coconut is the juicy, shiny, white flesh. This is an abnormal growth of the endosperm called Macapuno which is used in many cuisine.

How about the aesthetic value?

Coconut tree is one of the selected trees planted along the roads, beaches and resorts. The lines where they are planted, patterns and forms of the green leaves, the slender and sturdy trunk, the cluster of nuts, the inflorescence, all harmonizing with the clouds and blue skies makes a fascinating scenery affecting one's feeling - so cool and serene! ♥️

Ahhh, i miss my home, we got a lot of coconut trees in our yard. My father has told me that the coconut trees we have is that he planted those 50 dwarf coconut trees a week after I was born. It was my great memories that was left in me by my Tatay before he passed away, 9 years ago. So whenever I go back home, I make sure to count the trees and check if it's still complete and every morning I can have a nice and cold coconut juice - FREE!

I feel so happy that this post brings back those memories. My father also left us tall coconut trees and consider these as one of his best legacy. We are benefiting from the fruits and other parts as food and source of income. What he did became an inspiration and motivation too. I imitated what he did. Four more years and hopefully I can get the fruits of my own coconut trees.

This is indeed the tree of life. Everything from the trunk, to the leaves, to the fruit has a useful purpose. Buko salad is an all time favorite in our household. So is buko pandan. Sadly, there's not much coconut trees around here.
