To understand how a hereditary pattern is transmitted within a family, it is necessary to know the basic laws of genetic inheritance. Human genes have been studied scientifically to understand their normal functioning and if there are changes in them that can change the way they work. Genetic or inherited diseases are caused by an alteration of one or several genes, which is sometimes inherited from one of the two parents, with an alteration or mutation occurring in the gene.
En el ser humano existen más de 20.000 genes y por cada uno existen dos copias, una heredada del padre y otra heredada de la madre a excepción de los cromosomas X y Y que son los que determinan el sexo. Para que exista un patrón hereditario se necesita por lo menos una copia defectuosa del gen por parte de uno de los padres.

En este sentido la fibrosis quística pulmonar es un trastorno heredado que causa un grave daño a los pulmones, sistema digestivo y otros órganos. Afecta especialmente a las células que producen moco, sudor y jugos digestivos. Normalmente el sudor y jugos digestivos son ligeros y resbaladizos pero en una persona con fibrosis quística pulmonar hace que estas secreciones se vuelvan pegajosas y espesas y en lugar de actuar como lubricantes, tapan los conductos en los pulmones y el páncreas creando graves infecciones que afectan el sistema respiratorio y el aparato digestivo.

FUENTEA la mayoría de niños se les diagnostica la enfermedad a los dos años de edad, ya sea mediante análisis de sangre o cloruro del sudor, ante la presencia de síntomas como dolor abdominal por estreñimiento grave, aumento de gases, náuseas, falta de apetito, pérdida de peso, tos, mucosidad abundante en la nariz y los pulmones, fatiga, congestión o neumonías recurrentes, pero existe un análisis conocido como la “prueba del talón” que se trata de extraer una gota de sangre para detectar la posible presencia de ciertas enfermedades en el bebé incluyendo la fibrosis quística pulmonar. Esta detección precoz permite encarar cuanto antes el tratamiento adecuado para mejorar la calidad de vida del niño.
Most children are diagnosed with the disease at two years of age, either by blood or sweat chloride tests, in the presence of symptoms such as abdominal pain due to severe constipation, increased gas, nausea, lack of appetite, weight loss, cough, abundant mucus in the nose and lungs, fatigue, congestion or recurrent pneumonia, but there is an analysis known as the "heel test" that involves extracting a drop of blood to detect the possible presence of certain diseases in the baby including pulmonary cystic fibrosis.
