STORAGE

Many packages can be stacked one on top of another on the shelf. Some dehydrated foods can be stored without refrigeration. Think what a well stocked cupboard can do for you. On the spur of the moment you decide to ask Tobi to stay for lunch. Select your menu from emergency supply, a can of soup, a can of tuna fish, a can of fruit and you want to bake cookies. The stores are closed but check the emergency shelf, raisins, nuts, chocolate chips, coconut, condensed milk, they are all there. What a convenience it is to be able to store food.

METHODS OF SHOPPING HAVE CHANGED CONSIDERABLY BECAUSE OF PROCESSING AND PACKAGING

if the homemaker has good refrigerator and storage space, it is no longer necessary to shop every day to assure the family fresh products that are not palatable. The home maker can shop mainly once a week or take advantage of sales to store conveniently packaged foods for future use.

PACKAGED FOODS MEAN LESS WASTE

When you buy fresh fruits and vegetables for instance consider the skins, pods, and peeling that must be discarded. Canned frozen and packaged foods can be used just as they are purchased. There is no waste.
As an example, let's consider buying peas for dinner. A package of frozen peas that weigh 0.3kg will serve three or four people. The peas are ready to cook. You do not have to shell them. There is nothing to throw away. Just open the package and drop the peas into boiling water. A can of peas that weigh 0.5 kg will serve three or four people.

In this case, the peas are already cooked . Pour the contens inside a souce pan and heat them.

If you buy fresh peas in the hull, you will need 0.68 kg to serve four people. Then you must remove the peas from the hull. This is time consuming.
The home maker must make a decision. Does the colour ,flavour, and texture of fresh peas compensate for the time and energy it takes to prepare them? Have energy it takes to prepare them? Have a tasting party. Prepare all three kinds.

PREPARED AND PARTIALY PREPARED PACKAGED FOODS SAVE TIME

They are also dependable. These are called Convenience foods. This means that they have been partially mixed or precooked. The homemaker adds the final touch. cake mix is a convenience food. Add liquid, perhaps an egg, mix and bake. You have a cake for dinner, quickly and easily. Break open a carton, place the dough on a baking sheet, bake and you have hot biscuits sheet, bake and you have hot biscuits for dinner. Open the box and put the pie in the oven to bake. That is all there is to it. Can you see why they are called Convenience foods? What could be more convenient? It is possible to serve a delicious, full course mean using packaged foods, plus the seasonings and garnishes that suit your taste best.

CONVENIENCE FOODS ARE NOT NEW

Foods we take for granted once would have been considered convenience foods, consider flour, as example. Centuries ago, the flour was stored in form of while wheat kernels in bags. When the home maker needed it, 9 or 21 kg of wheat were taken to the mill to be grinded into flour. It was a heavy product that had to be sifted and resifted until it was light enough to use. Enrichment with vitamina and minerals was unknown. Today the flour comes packaged and ready to use m it isn't even necessary to sift certain types any more, and all of it enriches.

DOES PACKAGING AND PROCESSING MAKE FOOD PRODUCTS MORE EXPENSIVE?

A great deal affects the price of the food you buy, the quality of the product, the preparation that has been done by the manufacturer and the kind of shop in which you shop, the size of the package you purchased, the amount of money the company has been on advert, the value of money and the season of the yearm

Processing and packaging do add to the cost of the food because any extra manufacturing process cost money. If you don't prepare the food yourself, somebody prepares it for you. You pay for this service, even when cost are cost down by large scale production . In other words, part of the cost must be charged to mixing and packaging .
