Fishing Day • A Story of an Unexperienced Angler
I have always wanted to go fishing since I was a child. I always asked my father to take me out fishing but happened only once or twice in my life. One of the happiest moments of my childhood is when I caught a big fish. Maybe it was not really that big but since I was small it looked big to me. After that, I had no other memories of a fishing trip.
Finally, when we got a chance to go back to the beach I wanted to make the most out of it. A week before our trip I asked my wife if we could buy some fishing gear. After a couple of negotiations, she finally approved. Join us today as we share with you our fishing adventure during our holiday vacation.
There were a lot of people near the area from where we were staying. I wanted to go further down the shoreline where there we no people around. My wife and kids came along with me to see if I could catch anything and of course, our furbaby tagged along with us too.
The first gear that I had is called a fish trap that I bought from an online store. I bought this secretly and my wife was questioning me about it when it arrived. I said that it was not expensive but an alternative if I did not catch any fish with the fishing pole.
The fish trap is easy to use and I even watched some videos to see if it really worked. It is basically like a small tent when it is opened and made out of a net. There are holes on the net where fish could come in but will not be able to go out. The empty bottle will be used as a floater and tied to the trap in that way you would know where you left the trap.
The trap includes a free nylon string and fish food. This is the bait that will be used to entice the fish to come inside the trap.
This is what the fish food looks like but I also brought some bread as an added bait. As I recall from our previous snorkeling adventure fish loves bread.
Now I have put the fish bait and the bread in a small pouch that was provided with the kit.
I was ready to catch some fish with my new fish trap. My daughter was making fun of me and telling me that I would not catch anything. I was confident that I would catch a lot of fish as I saw in the video how the fisherman caught a lot and even had a good meal with the catch.
I was already imagining all the fish that I would catch and have my father-in-law cook it for dinner. I could already hear him say, "You did good son".
I headed out to the ocean and went to the deepest part that I could with the water up to my shoulders.
I found a good spot and I even felt some sea grass beneath my feet. I figured it was a feeding ground for fish and I was sure I would catch something.
I opened up the trap and this is how it looks like. With 16 small openings, I have more chances of enticing the fish to come inside my trap.
The bait has been set and I placed it in the middle of the trap. I slowly submerged it and planned to leave it there for an hour or two.
The empty water bottle I have tied to the trap so I could easily find it when I come back. I headed back to shore and I prepare my fishing pole next.
This fishing pole that I ordered online almost did not arrive on time. Usually delivery takes around 3-5 days when the product is stocked locally. I ordered it a week before our trip and I was confident that it will arrive on time. After 5 days I was worried as the seller has not shipped my order yet. I sent a message to the seller asking why it has not shipped yet. They said that the warehouse made a mistake and I just found out that the product is shipped from China. I was upset as their page clearly stated locally. It will never arrive on time in this case.
I told the seller that I am very disappointed as it would ruin our fishing trip as we had nothing to use. They apologized said they were very sorry and they will try their best for it to arrive on time with no guarantees. It was my chance to go fishing after a very long time and my plan seems to have crumbled. I was very upset and told them that their sorry would not be able to catch any fish. I felt bad saying that but I just gave up hope on the fishing pole.
On the day before our trip, I got a message on my phone that delivery was on its way. As I checked it was the fishing pole kit that I ordered. I was very happy and immediately sent a message to the seller thanking him for doing their best for it to arrive. I gave them a very good review and a 5 stars rating. I would have given more stars if I could.
The kit includes a lot of fishing accessories like lures, hooks and a lot of other stuff that I don't know.
As far as I can remember we only used fish and shrimp as bait when fishing. I was always fascinated by using lures when catching fish. Again I watched a lot of videos on how to properly use lures. It seems easy, just cast and reel. After a few minutes, there would be a fish on the other end of the line. It looked easy on the videos and I said to myself that I could do this.
Now armed with my new fishing pole. I headed out into the ocean again feeling a true angler. My wife and daughter were laughing at me again and said that I would not catch anything. In return, I told them, "Tonight you will have a seafood feast".
As soon as I reached a good spot I prepared my rod and did some practice casting first. I did not know what I was doing but I just recalled and followed the videos that I saw.
I did some pretty good casts out there and reeled it in after a few minutes. After an hour of casting, I still did not catch anything. I was getting a bit tired and distressed that I was not catching anything.
My brother-in-law has been asking me repeatedly that he wanted to give it a try. I told him to wait as I was still enjoying myself. Finally, I allowed him to use my new fishing pole. He was so happy as he never tried a fishing pole before. After a couple of casts, he shouted, called me that something is fighting the line and he could not reel it in. He was shouting that he caught something big. I told him not to pull it as the hook might have been caught in the rocks. Normally the line should move in different directions if a fish is caught but I noticed in this case that the line is stationary. Again I told him not to force it but he still reeled it in and the line finally snapped missing the lure at the end of the line.
He slowly gave me back the fishing pole with a guilty face and slowly walked backwards towards the shore.
I guess fishing is over for the day and I'm not sure anymore if I would catch anything even if I attach a new lure. Also, it was starting to get dark. It was time to check back on my fish trap before I head back to shore.
Since I did not catch anything I was not expecting to catch anything from the fish trap as well. When I reach the spot where I left the trap. I slowly raised it and was surprised that there were two small fish inside it. I was excited and screamed, "I caught something, I caught something". Excitedly I went back to show everyone what I caught. I wanted to take a picture but it seems our very old waterproof camera has leaked in and would not open anymore. Anyway, I still have my camera onshore to take some photos.
Everyone gathered around to see what I caught and everyone began to laugh as they were very small fish. My wife and daughter were asking me where is our seafood dinner for tonight. I just got too excited that I caught something from the trap to prove that it works but I find the scenario very funny.
My brother-in-law picked up a dead fish from the shore and asked me to take a photo of his imaginary catch.
Just to show you how small are the fish that I caught.
So small and I don't even know what type of fish they are. I guess they are not enough for a big seafood feast 🤣. I took them out of the net and sent them back to the ocean.
Time to get back as it was getting dark. Everything didn't seem to go our way but was a fun day and I sort of caught something 😂.
Maybe next time I will try again and who knows I'll catch something bigger enough for a good meal.
Before I forget let me just tell you that I went back to this same spot the next day and left the trap overnight. I was sure I will be catching something big if I did that. Guess what, the next morning when I pulled it out. The trap was empty 🤣. Cheers!
Thank you for joining us today on our funny fishing adventure experience. Hope to see you again soon.

It looks fun for you guys but I don't think I have the patience for fishing although because of the pandemic, I read more people are doing that in Singapore too.
After one hour of not catching anything. I think I lost patience too 😂. Looks like they are enjoying it in Singapore.
The important things to take away from the experience are you and your family spent time together, you took on a new hobby that is very addictive in a good way, you actually did catch two fish, everyone got a good laugh (as the saying goes "laughter is the best medicine") and as a bonus you created an awesome post to share with us on HIVE!
Have a terrific week! @mhel🎣🐡🐠🐟
Hello Nina how are you? Thank you for dropping by. I appreciate it. It was more like of a comedy show than a fishing trip 😂 and yes you are right laughter is the best medicine. I hope we get a chance to go fishing again soon. Have a great week!
