What Your Eye Pain May Be Telling You

in GEMS5 years ago
Hello Everyone,

And Welcome Once Again to my Blog, i hope you and your families are staying safe and adhering to all the protocols been put in place to combat the pandemic. Today i would like to us to take a look at a common ocular symptom that many patients present to the clinic and what it may mean.

So you are feeling that pain in your eye, perhaps it even giving you some headaches or it giving you red eyes, are you also tearing in addition?, well there are a number of possible reasons why that could be happening however lets look at a few of what these may mean and the need for you to see your optometrist when you experience these symptoms.

The first thing we are going to look at is from the perspective of refractive errors. There three main categories of refractive errors, myopia otherwise known as shortsightedness, longsightedness or hyperopia and astigmatism which could be a combination of both or one. However, ocular ache is mostly associated with hyperopia, what happens is that without your spectacles your eyes accomodate more or simply work harder than usual for you to be able to see things at far, the more the eye does this the more it gets tired and eventually it feels over stressed and starts to give you that dull ache in the eye. Wearing your spectacles eases this workload and takes care of the pain. So please do like wearing your spectacles, your optometrist do want the best for you.

The second thing am going to talk about is glaucoma, specifically closed angle glaucoma, most people are aware that glaucoma is the silent thief of sight because they do not give any symptoms or indications until sometimes is too late, but there is one class of glaucoma that comes with sever pain in the eye, and people susceptible to this type are people with close angles in the narrow chamber (your optometrist would be able to tell if you fall within this category after a slit lamp examination), based on current statistics Asians are more susceptible due to their narrow angles in general. The condition is mostly an acute case and without quick intervention to lower the pressure build up in the eye, one may loss the sight. So do not hesitate to see you optometrist when you notice a sudden sharp pain that keeps building up, especially when you see halos around light.

Well, there are lots of pathological conditions that can also come with pain in the eye and we would be looking at all these as time goes on but for now this is what i have for you, it is important to know that whiles your ocular pain may be a mild condition with nothing to worry about it could also severe and sight threatening even if the pain is not severe or is tolerable, thus report all ocular symptoms and manifestations to your optometrist as soon as possible and always seek consultation from the right place and the right source.
