Good morning dear readers, today I took a break from my recipes to talk to you a little bit about: What is strabismus and why should it be treated early in children?
Strabismus is the deviation of the alignment of one eye in relation to the other. This happens due to a lack of coordination of the eye muscles. This prevents the child from being able to fix the gaze on a single point in space, resulting in incorrect vision. It is a brain disease and it is a hereditary condition, presenting antecedents in 60 or 70% of the relatives of the cases. Strabismus can be cured with glasses but in most cases with surgery.
Any child who begins to deviate an eye, regardless of age, should be seen immediately by an ophthalmologist who will determine what type of strabismus the child has. Often children as young as 4 or 5 years old are first brought for consultation when it is too late and they present blindness of the affected eye.
A child should not attend school with strabismus, it should be corrected with glasses or surgery as this lowers the child's self-esteem creating an inferiority complex in the relationship with their peers.
Buenos días queridos lectores hoy realicé una pausa en mis recetas para hablarles un poco sobre: ¿Qué es el estrabismo y por qué debe ser tratado a tiempo en los niños?
El estrabismo es la desviación del alineamiento de un ojo en relación con el otro esto sucede por la falta de coordinación de los músculos oculares. Esto impide que el niño pueda fijar la mirada en un solo punto en el espacio lo que produce una visión incorrecta. Es una enfermedad del cerebro y de condición hereditaria presentando antecedentes en un 60 o 70% de los familiares de los casos. El estrabismo se puede curar con lentes pero en la mayoría de los casos con cirugía.
Todo niño que empieza a desviar un ojo, indistintamente de su edad debe ser visto inmediatamente por un oftalmólogo el cuál determinará que tipo de estrabismo presenta el niño. Con frecuencia niños de 4 o 5 años son llevados a consulta por primera vez cuándo ya es muy tarde y presentan ceguera del ojo afectado.
Un niño no debe asistir a la escuela con estrabismo este debe ser corregido con lentes o cirugía ya que esto disminuye el autoestima del niño creando un complejo de inferioridad en la relación con sus compañeros.
Types of strabismus:
- Comitant strabismus: When the deviation of the eyes is the same no matter which way the gaze is directed.
- Incomitant strabismus: Eye deviation varies with the direction of gaze.
Types of strabismus include:
- Convergent strabismus or inward deviation.
- Divergent strabismus or outward deviation.
- Hypertropia or upward deviation.
- Hypotropia or downward deviation.
Tipos de estrabismo:
• Estrabismo comitante: Cuando la desviación de los ojos es igual sin importar hacia donde se dirige la mirada.
• Estrabismo incomitante: La desviación del ojo varía con la dirección de la mirada.
Los tipos de estrabismo incluyen:
•Estrabismo convergente o desviación hacia dentro.
• Estrabismo divergente o desviación hacia afuera.
• Hipertropia o desviación hacia arriba.
• Hipotropia o desviación hacia abajo.
Prevention:
Every newborn should be checked by an ophthalmologist from birth its visul function is going to be determined in the first months of the child's life.
Strabismus, whether noticeable or not, should be treated in time to determine its cause and to be able to have the appropriate treatment according to the case.
It is necessary that once strabismus is diagnosed to keep in control with the ophthalmologist until adolescence.
Treatment:
It will depend on the type of strabismus present:
- Surgical treatment
- Lenses
- Use of a patch
Treatment helps to:
- Avoid amblyopia
- Straighten the eyes
- Restore vision in both eyes
Prevención:
• Todo recién nacido debe ser revisado por un oftalmólogo desde el nacimiento su función visul se va a determinar en los primeros meses de vida del niño.
• El estrabismo sea notable o no debe ser tratado a tiempo para determinar su causa y poder tener el tratamiento adecuado según sea el caso.
• Es necesario que una vez diagnosticado el estrabismo mantenerse en control con el oftalmólogo hasta la adolescencia.
Tratamiento:
Dependerá del tipo de estrabismo que se presente:
• Tratamiento quirúrgico
• Lentes
• Uso de un parche
El tratamiento ayuda a:
• Evitar la ambliopia
• Enderezar los ojos
• Restaurar la visión en ambos ojos
The experience I am living with my daughter regarding strabismus:
My daughter Alys, who is only 3 years old, was diagnosed with divergent strabismus (outward deviation of the eyes) caused by astigmatism, which is an irregularity in the curvature of the cornea that does not allow her to focus her gaze towards a certain place in space and her eyes are deviated. As a treatment your strabismus specialist ophthalmologist (ophthalmologist specializing in strabismus) placed lenses to correct astigmatism, go to consultation every 4 months to have a control and if necessary change the formula of the lenses. If not corrected, surgical intervention will be considered at 5 years of age.
La experiencia que estoy viviendo con mi hija con respecto al estrabismo:
Mi hija Alys de tan solo 3 años fue diagnosticada con estrabismo divergente (desviación hacía afuera de los ojos) ocasionado por astigmatismo que es una irregularidad en la curvatura de la córnea que no le permite enfocar su mirada hacia un determinado lugar en el espacio y está se desvía. Como tratamiento su estrabologa (oftalmólogo especialista en el estrabismo) le colocó lentes para corregir astigmatismo, acudir a consulta cada 4 meses para tener un control y de ser necesario cambiar la fórmula de los lentes. En caso de no corregirse se considerará la intervención quirúrgica a sus 5 años.

Tratar esta alteración del alineamiento de los ojos es muy importante precozmente para facilitar un adecuado desarrollo visual. Igual como mencionas, todo niño debe ser evaluado por oftalmologia bien pequeño, aunque sospechemos q no tiene ninguna alteración, pues es frecuente que algunas alteraciones de la visión se enmascaren de pequeños y no salgan a relucir hasta q comiencen la escuela, y a veces resulta tarde. Muchas gracias amiga, yo me percaté de esto cuando note que mi hija desviaba uno de sus ojos cuando veía el televisor. Y de inmediato la lleve al oftalmólogo, esperamos que se pueda corregir antes de los 5 años ya que estamos actuando con lentes corfectivos en una buena edad y ella está en pleno crecimiento.
