I suddenly heard my mum scream, Tobi, fire, fire, come out!!. How did we get here, you might be wondering, so let me start the story from the beginning. The process of weaning my child, that is, stopping chest feeding for him, required some extra help, so I came to stay with my mum for a while so she could help me out with her experienced knowledge on the entire process.
Since he always enjoys sucking at night, it has been quite difficult for him since that privilege has been taken away, and we have to do so many things to pacify him.
I stayed with him outside so his cry wouldn't disturb others. We stayed outside together until midnight, and it seemed sleep was far away from his eyes. I danced, sang, and did all I could, but he still didn't sleep. My mom heard my voice and asked if my baby was still awake, and immediately I replied with a yes.
She got up, came outside, and asked me to go to bed. Five minutes after I went inside, I heard her scream, Fire, fire, and I ran outside, only to see that a house a few meters away from us was engulfed in serious fire.
It was really scary with my mom confused on the next move to make. We ran outside, taking our phones and the power bank that I was holding at the time.
When we got outside, we found a large crowd trying to help out with the fire issue. People brought water in large volumes, while others used sand.
Everyone in the community made a great effort to put a stop to the light. My mom asked me to stay back with the baby while she went there to join efforts to put out the light as well.
I stayed back, praying and hoping it wouldn't extend beyond normal. After some time, the fire greatly declined, but the house burnt down, and all properties vanished, saving only the weak walls.
The surrounding houses were not affected due to the intense efforts of others, but for the one affected, not a pin could be saved from it.
The fire service came around later, but that was after the fire had gone down; they carried out their duty to completely put out the fire.
All through the night, the entire environment smelled of smoke, leaving us with an experience we cannot forget in a hurry. When I went to the site of the incident this morning, I saw the house owner, who is a young man, standing helpless and hopeless, obviously thinking of the next line of action he could possibly take. The foodstuff he had gotten was left outside burnt and wasted. I am sure that as a family man, he had probably made plans for the month with the foodstuff I meet outside.
This incident has definitely changed all his plans, as he needs to start looking for a roof over his head first of all.
Thank goodness, no life was lost through the incident, but properties were definitely destroyed, and it may take a while before the man will be able to acquire them back.
I went to pay him a condolence visit and encourage the wife in my own little way.
