A LITTLE HISTORY๐๐งญ/UN POCO DE HISTORIA๐ฉ๐ท
I know well that when you see this gigantic image the Christ the Redeemer of Brazil comes to mind, and because if this monument was built inspired by that of the Latin American country, the construction began in mid-1934, it is said that the Cardinal of Lisbon in one of his trips to Brazil, he was so excited to see Christ the Redeemer that when he arrived in Lisbon he made a campaign to raise funds to build a similar one! obviously it was a daring project for a country with few resources!
It was only at the end of the fifties that the monument was built, it is a work with a religious meaning that symbolizes peace, love and gratitude. The main objective of building the Cristo Rei monument is to thank God for keeping Portugal safe in WWII! It is an imposing structure of 28 meters high!
ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION๐๐งญ/SOBRE LA CONSTRUCCION๐ฉ๐ท
The Cristo Rei that is located next to the Rio Tejo was delicately sculpted by Francisco de Sousa! It has 4 pillars, this has a symbolic representation that means that it points to the four cardinal points, at the bottom of the structure there is a small chapel that bears the name (Nossa Senhora da Paz), the monument has a large elevator inside that allows us access to the upper part of the Christ!

The inauguration of the Monument was on May 17, 1959, whose day is celebrated on Petencostes, for the ceremony many cardinals from both Brazil and Portugal participated, it was a special day for the population of Portugal in which more than 300 thousand people attended. ! The construction of the monument lasted more than 10 years, for it more than 40 thousand tons of (blessed) a mixture of cement, stones, water were used! Incredibly the Christ was sculpted by hand in its own structure and lifted more than 100 meters from the ground!
Cristo Rei rises 215 meters above sea level, has a total height of 110 meters, despite the fact that unlike Christ the Redeemer it is smaller by only 2 meters! the Cristo de Brazil looks much bigger because of being built on a mountain but they are almost the same size! Only the statue measures 28 meters and from side to side bone from palm to palm the Christ measures 28 meters! Christ has a heart on his chest that measures 1.89 meters!

The monument has a beautiful history and it is that the children participated in the construction, they helped to raise funds to complete the project. The initiative was baptized with the name "small stones" translated as small stones, it had a period of time between 1939 and 1958๐๐๐ง๐ง๐ง
Then in 1999 the monument passed into the hands of the Catholic Church in Setubal, we already know that the Catholic Church is independent of the state so it carried out some restoration works on the monument, so in 2001 the restorations began ! the monument is considered a national sanctuary.

A VISIT TO THE CHAPEL๐๐งญ/VISITA A LA CAPILLA๐ฉ๐ท
The ticket to enter the monument and the chapel costs 4-6 euros, you do not have a guided tour so I recommend you read a little about the history to understand many things, when you are in the chapel you are greeted by a nun who will explain a Little about the pictures and designs that are on display, it's free too.
Inside the chapel we see some works that relate apparitions and dreams of the Christian religion, mentions of the Book of Apocalypse, there are photos of all the cardinals who were directors of this project, as well as an interesting replica of Cristo Rei, we see a comparison of Cristo Rei and Christ the Redeemer, they explain to us that Cristo Rei is smiling because he is happy to receive us and with open arms because he has no distinctions and receives anyone in his arms!

I think this is the favorite part of all of us who visit the Christ in addition to its great history, when we take the elevator and reach the top of the monument the beautiful view we get from 360 degrees around Lisbon is fantastic! we can clearly see the main bridge of the capital, April 25 and range basque! and of course, as it is to be supposed, we have a view over the four cardinal points of the capital!
