Hive party game project

For a long time I have had a project in mind; it is a video game that I intend to make for the HIVE blockchain.

Video games never go out of style

The video game industry could be said to be one of the most economically generous, one that accrues a lot of money, even more than the film industry, directly and indirectly. Perhaps that is what attracts many people to that industry. I mean of course small teams of graphic artists and programmers who want to launch into the arena, try their luck in that field, and of course large companies also have all the money in the world to make video games, but for now, we will focus on small groups.

Many of us who have tried to make a video game realize that it is not a trivial matter. In my opinion, video games are a piece of engineering that must be perfectly polished. Not only must they work well, they must be fun and hook players in to play, and thus generate enough income to be profitable.

This may be a cheat in video game development. These days we see small studios that managed to become rich overnight, studios that launch great and successful games; to name a few examples: Plants vs zombies, FEZ, Angry Birds, etc. Their seemingly sudden success makes many of us feel motivated to start that great epic game that we have in mind, full of levels and a complex story. But what we don't know is that many of these development teams failed miserably, several times. And they had to pay a very high price before achieving the success of their dreams. On the other hand, most of these small studios used to do smaller projects to test their ideas. Maintaining motivation while developing something with a low rate of relative success costs a lot; it can greatly affect you, but one must learn how to deal.

The key here is to start small, test our ideas and thus, gain more and more experience.

Video games for the blockchain.

Over the years I have gained some experience in video game development. Not much, of course, but I have published these games:

1. On block game

My favorite genres are action and adventure, fighting, and racing games. What are your favorite games? The point is that I want to make games similar to the ones that I have found on the HIVE blockchain. Do not misunderstand, the games that currently exist on the blockchain are great; I just want to do a little experiment with this, for fun.

I want to make a series of casual games that can be played by everyone, simple games that you already know you would end up liking. I want to take the Nintendo school as a base, having fun amongst friends is the main objective, using simple mini-games that may be liked by others. This will only be an experiment, but I think it could work.

Some ideas for video games

Nothing concrete yet, but I'd like to show you an idea that I've been scribbling in my head.

A fighting game

I would like to make a small, real-time, 2D combat game of a maximum of 4 players; 1 vs 1, 4 vs 4, 2 vs 3 etc. The main objective is to collect and retain the largest number of HIVES coins within a limited time until time runs out. But not only that, you can also use different weapons that will be scattered throughout the scene, such as: pistols, bombs, magic powers, mines etc. With all this, I intend to allow the opponents to create games full of emotion and with a fighting passion.

Steps to follow:

To make this game, problems must be solved; for example:

Game play

The mechanics must be polished to avoid mistakes during the game. This is the basic foundation and is why I need to develop a good gameplay at the conceptual level, first. For now, this is all in broad strokes.

The levels

Levels are a very important part of the game; they must be balanced so that players feel comfortable moving between them. Level design is serious business, so I'm going to spend more time detailing them to completion.

The graphics

Perhaps this is the most laborious part of the equation. Making graphics for video games must be made with certain characteristics and specifications, such as: file size, number of animations, format, etc. to get the best possible performance during the gameplay. It is not enough to only have the conceptual art of the game, those images have to be digitized by someone who knows how to use digital programs such as Photoshop, Inkscape, Gimp, etc. Honestly, I am not an expert on the subject, but I do use some of these tools to create.

Programming

And of course, the programming can not be missed; it gives interactivity and dynamism to the game, per se.

For this matter, I still think about which engine to use. It can be a dilemma deciding between Unity, Phaser or my own engine, which I have have abandoned on GitHub 😅 Vx-engine. I need to choose the best platform to publish my game on, and based on that, I will make the right decision for my game.

Real time

Perhaps this will be the most difficult piece of the entire development of my video game, in fact, I do not have a clear path to follow. I have used Node.js for a while and I think that I can take advantage of it to create the real time aspect of the game. I do not I know how to do it yet, given its complex nature, so I need to take this seriously.

Music and SFX

The musical section will be in charge of @gustavmahler (fungi melancholy). He is my friend and he is awesome making music for anything

For now all of this is still in my head, but of course I'm going to document the development of this little game on my HIVE blog.

Do you like video game development?

Tell me what you are working on.
