One week of topcomment
One week after starting my @topcomment initiative it's time to take a look at the first results and explain a bit more about this initiative.
In the first few days of the Topcomment initiative I've upvoted a total of 58 comments.
Thanks to the delegations the full vote value is: $0.03 (0.14 HIVE) at the moment.
A bit further down in this blog you can read how you could support this initiative so more and/or higher rewards can be given away.
I was thrilled by the positive reactions on both my announcement post as the different snaps I created to promote this initiative.
A special thanks to @detectblock and @deeanndmathews who promoted topcomment in their blogs:

How topcomment works
First of all I want to clarify one thing. Some people thought that Topcomment is run by a bot, but it isn't! I'm doing the curation all manually. This should prevents abuse of the rewards.
And than about the process itself: There are two ways that your comment can be upvoted.
Everyone who notices a high quality and engaging comment (more about this later) can mention @topcomment to nominate it for an upvote. Whether it will receive an upvote will depend on if I agree with you.
I've also created a HiveSQL script (with the help of @arcange, @pavelsku and @dlmmqb) where I can filter comments with a certain number of characters (and excluding automated comments). Large comments often indicate that someone has put some effort in his or her comment. Which takes us to the following subject: quality comments.
Which comments can get upvotes and which don't?
Not all nominated comments will receive an upvote from Topcomment.
Although quality this is quite subjective, there are a few characteristics that I'm looking for in a comment. And I also have some other reasons not to upvote a quality comment.
For now I apply the following rules:
1. The 'commenter' must have put some effort in the post
I've received a couple of nominations with for comment with just a couple of words. Although these reactions can be very valuable for the author, they are not eligible for an upvote from Topcomment.
2. The 'commenter' must have read the blog and comment substantively
The comment must contain a reaction to the blog. There must be an engagement with the blog from the author.
3. Post with hatred, racism or conspiracy are not upvoted!
I like to keep it positive, so none of the above subjects will get upvotes.
4. Comments and/or post from people that have Hivewatchers downvotes
I don't want to contribute to scammers or fraudsters. Receiving a downvote from Hivewatchers is a sign for me not to upvote the comment.
5. AI generated comments
This one speaks for itself. These won't receive upvotes.
6. Comment with rewards
If a comment already has quite some rewards I'll skip the upvote. Same goes for a comment that will be receiving rewards from the commentrewarder initiative.
7. Giveaways or contests
Entries for giveaways and contests are excluded for a topcomment upvote.
8. Comments not interacting with the authors blog
Comment that only tell the commenters story and where the commenter is not engaging with the author of the blog won't get upvoted by topcomment.
Some figures
58 comment have been upvoted by @topcomment in the past week.
It has been nicely distributed over a lot of different people.
Support Topcomment with Delegations
The more delegations Topcomment gets, the higher the rewards I can give away!
I have received the following delegations already. Thanks to all those who have delegated!
Username | Delegation |
---|---|
friendlymoose | 2,001 HP |
shanibeer | 1,000 HP |
michupa | 200 HP |
detectblock | 10 HP |
Total | 3,211 HP |
You can support the Topcomment initiative too by delegating HP
| 10 HP | 25 HP | 50 HP | 100 HP | 250 HP | 500 HP | 1000 HP | 1500 HP | 2000 HP |
I received a question by @curamax on Snaps whether there are plans to share the curation rewards with delegators in the future.
The answer for that is: not for now. I've just started this initiative and would like to use the curation rewards to improve the stake of the account so it is not totally depending on delegations (which can be withdrawn).
But it is surely something I can take look at in the future. But first I would like to have this project running for a couple of months to see how it goes.
Following the Trail
If you don't want to delegate you can also choose to following the Topcomment voting trail via Hive.Vote.
This way you do support the project and the commenters, but you'll receive the curation rewards yourself. In Hive.Vote you can configure a percentage for the votes.

Society is inherently inert. If something works, even poorly, people think there’s no need to change it. This is likely due to laziness and plain human foolishness. Sometimes a system may already be in a critical state, requiring changes to function, but most people will still believe everything is fine. That’s why society needs a "push"—arguments and reasoning about why they should do more than they currently do. A format like these weekly reports is just what’s needed.
Many underestimate the value of comment threads in general. I did too until I came across a financial report where the author tracks the number of comments and sets a sort of minimum benchmark for the ratio of posts to comments.
I’m gathering information on the formation of curation accounts without the direct involvement of whales. So far, the most effective example has been the duo-curator account, which has grown by 35k HP in less than a year (the curator periodically publishes reports, so progress can be tracked on their page—it’s interesting). They do have a comprehensive approach. I recommend reading Duo White Paper. It’s an interesting model, though labor-intensive, but you might find some ideas for the future.
Thanks for the tip! I'll look into that Duo White Paper!
Let's discuss this further in dm. There r multiple benefits for doing it. And the technology is already available and free to use with a small fee. 50% paying back to Delegators might be enough for now while 48% returns might drive more delegators.
Also, u can look into more options so u don't rely on upvotes and u can tip good commenters beyond 7 days window.
Interesting... You can find me (@friendlymoose) on Discord.
I can't thank you enough for this initiative. As someone who prefers commenting and curation rather than having any original thoughts, I'm especially pleased to be one of the first recipients of your rewards.
However, I also feel somewhat guilty for breaking rule 5. Because I recently learned I was born due to Artificial Insemination. So all my comments are AI generated! 😂

Already such a fine report -- excellent! Thank you for the specifics in comments that you are looking for -- No. 6 is important to me because I do use Comment Rewarder on some posts and not overlapping them is important!
You can use it on a post with commentrewarder enabled. When the post had almost no rewards and commentrewarder is set to 3%, the comments hardly get rewards.
But I'll look at that myself 🙂
OK, that makes sense as well.
