“Journey” I Can Never Forget

Hello friends,

How are you doing?

I hope this quarantine is treating you well till now. I know it's pretty much difficult to spend your time doing the same activity every day. Even I am getting bored now.

The only place I can go is my backyard. I go there and click photos. I can't explain how much I wanted to go out. How much I want to travel to my favorite places. But the reality is I can't go anywhere... even if I tried.

While thinking about all those things, I remembered my first flight experience. I thought I should share it with you guys. It is a journey I will never forget.

So here's my story:

I was traveling to Kuala Lumpur (KLIA) from New Delhi (IGI airport). It was my first time for a flight experience, so I was really excited. I was confused on what to expect - and what will happen. After the first check-in, we had the security check and immigration check. Then I reached my gate number. There was still 1 hour for the boarding, so I was sitting there. Then a weird old man came and sat next to me and started asking me questions like:

  • Are you also going to KL?
  • What do you do?
  • Why are you going to?

Initially, I was quiet. And then he got personal with his questions, so I told him to go away and stop disturbing me. (Don't we all have that experience of meeting strangers who think you are their lost best friend?)

Anyhow the time passes, and boarding starts. I walk into the queue for my turn to enter. Then I entered the flight, and the staff greets me. I got a window seat. I pushed the handbag into the compartment above and sat on my seat. A guy came and sat next to me. I was looking out from the window, and everything was looking so beautiful from that tiny window. Everybody sat and the flight was almost full almost ready to go. Air hostess came and starts giving safety instructions, and I was listening to them very carefully.

The plane engine started, and I can see the wing movements from my window. I plugged in my AirPods and played my favorite song "Hymn for the Weekend by Coldplay" at full volume. Well, I'm listening to it at this moment while writing. This song gives me some positive energy and helps me to fight my fear as I have a fear of height. Every time the flight takes off, I play this song with full volume so that I can just enjoy that feeling instead of embracing fear.

So the plane starts moving slowly towards the runway. I can't explain you that feeling. As I told you earlier, this was my first time, so I had no idea what it is going to be next. I was sitting on my seat with the seat belt on and continuously looking out from the window and desperately waiting for the taking off. Then the moment I was waiting for was here.

The speed of the plane at the runway was breathtaking. The music was loud in my ears and I was feeling like I'm on a high-speed never-ending roller coaster. Everything was dark. My mind was drawing blank. And I was feeling numb.

And you know what's funny? There was a guy sitting next to me. Like the guy at the boarding, he was asking me questions too. I guess they were both brothers.

Like me, he was also traveling for the first time. He said that he also had a phobia from height and started a conversation about the hijacking and crashing. I was already scared, and he was talking this bullshit, you know? I wanted to punch him on his little nose. Or maybe throw him out of the plane.

Then, in my head, anytime there was a turbulence, I consoled myself by saying: "Deeksha, it's okay. This is a train." I am sure you can relate to this. We all tell stories to our brain to convince everything is alright.

And after 5 long hours, finally, I completed my journey! I had a great time. The flight landed... and I walked out of the plane to enter Kuala Lumpur - the city that I have fallen in love with. I know this story has nothing special or something new. But it's was really a memorable journey for me and I can never forget this whole life. It was my first time and I bet you guys also feel the same way on your first flight. It is the feelings you just can't express in words.

That is the worst conversation to have when you're scared of flying, but quite funny probably looking back on it. Nice read!

Indeed, I wanted to punch him. 😝
