With Chinese New Year (or Lunar New Year) just around the corner, we have seen many advertisements around (yes, even in Australia) with sales and different products marketed for this cultural celebration. One of the advertisements we saw on our social media were special Kit Kat flavours for Chinese New Year and we were attracted by it but didn’t think we’d come across it as we had no plans to venture out to the shops any time soon.
It just happened that we had to put our car in for service in the morning and we thought, why not catch the train to the city as we were no where near home and there was really nothing nearby that would keep us entertained until late in the afternoon when the car was ready to be picked up? We haven’t been to the city for a very very long time as well as we work from home and avoid busy public places.
Face masks on, hopped on the train and off we went. The train ride was pretty quiet. We think it is because of it being off-peak time and many people are still working from home due to the pandemic. The last time I caught a train was in June 2020. Yup, that’s how long it’s been and I kinda miss catching the train.
The city was fairly quiet. The shopping centres were quiet and the usually bustling Pitt St mall had very little people walking through. A lot of retail stores and restaurants have closed down due to the struggles with the pandemic and it was just really saddening to see.
After spending some time walking around, we found the Kit Kat store which had opened ... who knows when. It’s been that long since we’ve visited the city and some things looked different.
Entering the store, the walls were filled with chocolate after chocolate after chocolate! It was chocolate heaven! Sooooo many flavours and such a big variety! They had flavours from Japan, Vanuatu, Australia, and so much more! They also had a very small “chocolate train” where you sit, pick and eat your Kit Kat like at a sushi train. They also had an area to design your own Kit Kat! We checked that out but it would take around 7 hours so we didn’t get to do that.
Regretfully we didn’t take pictures of parts of the store as we were too concentrated on the many different flavours the store had to offer.
The store had flavours like lammington, espresso, sake, matcha, melon, dragon fruit and lychee, peanut butter & jelly, yuzu, mint.... the list goes on! There was a huge range to select from and we stood there for a long time deciding and thinking how each one would taste like.
So, which flavours were the special ones for Chinese New Year? It’s the black sesame and durian flavoured Kit Kat. We decided to buy a few of the black sesame flavoured ones as gifts. I was tempted by the durian flavour as I love durian but I am pretty sceptical about durian flavoured things as it just doesn’t do the real king of fruits any justice.
Being a tradition of ours, we usually gift our family and friends with little things for Chinese New Year. This year we decided that we can gift chocolates as there are a few special flavours we think they may enjoy.
We grabbed a few more of other flavours for the nephews, nieces and friends. While paying for the things we’ve picked out, the lovely sales lady threw in a whole lot of freebies!! More chocolate!! Gosh! It was totally unexpected! She didn’t even count and just grabbed a handful of things from the buckets behind the counter.
So here is our Kit Kat haul for the day which includes the freebies. From this stash, only 2 belong to us which we really wanted to try. Not exactly fans of chocolate but the flavour seemed interesting. Can you guess which one?
We can’t wait to gift these to our family and friends! Hopefully they’ll enjoy indulging on these treats 🍫!!
wahhhhhh its like christmas all over again!! I haven't been out to the city since we started WFH but maybe should go soon and check this place out!!
