I have no idea what to call this dress I made about two weeks ago, but I'd go with side pleated dress. So welcome to my blog yet again, if you're new here, welcome. My name's Precious and I love sewing.
This dress pattern is quite popular and I always wanted to DIY it. Hopefully, my explanation and pictures makes it easy for when you'd want to try it out.
For this particular pleated pattern dress, I used the slash and spread method to get all of the pleats. It's the same pattern I used for my exaggerated sleeves here. Anyway, I went fabric shopping and got 2½ yards of fabric. I was home when I realized a stretchy fabric would work better for the dress pattern so I went back and got another fabric with enough stretch.
So what you'd need is;
- 2½ stretchy fabric
- Brown paper
- Long ruler
- Pins
- Cellotape
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
Let's begin shall we?
First, I made my pattern on brown paper using my measurements and cut out the dress pattern. I then placed the paper pattern on my folded fabric
I first cut out my back panel on fold
To cut the front panel, I first cut out the semi circle I drew on the side of the paper and also cut open the lines I made on the dress for the pleats
I placed the pattern on my fabric and left 2 inches in between each slashed line. The paper is secured to the fabric with tape and pins to avoid shifting
I also cut out the semi circle pattern on fabric so remember not to throw that out beforehand
Next, I pleated around the semi circle and secured with pins
It was time to attach the semi circle to the pleated part to get my full front panel
I made a lining/interface for both front and back panels and turned in the rough edges of the necklines
Totally forgot to take a picture of the sleeve pattern but it's a regular sleeve. I attached both sleeves and closed both sides of the dress
Lastly, I folded in the hem of the dress and sewed it all round
Note
- This dress is without a zip because it's super stretchy fabric and the neckline is wide enough for my head to go through
- The most stretchy part of the fabric should be the width of the dress
- I cut my dress pattern without any seam allowance whatsoever because of the stretch of the fabric
Here's how it looked on first fitting held by pins only on the sides.
After appropriate adjustments, here's my final look
