Today, I am excited to share a simple yet an intriguing experience that I had this morning - One that involves my son and me, a trash bag and offcourse our neighborhood street. It was just a little act, however the leasons we derived were heartfelt and definitely intense.
" Mum!! why do we need to pick up other people's trash?" At that particular moment, I realized is the right time to seize the opportunity to teach him an important lesson that will remain with him for a life time.This morning, we emerged outside my house with a positive goal in mind: to clean our environment and surroundings as part of the @cleanplanet initiatives. At first my son was inquisitive but skeptical at the same time.He asked me:
FIRSTLY HERE IS HOW OUR ACTIVITY WENT
REASONS WHY @CLEANPLANET IS IMPORTANT
1.) Obligated to our Environment : Since our home is the earthly planet in general, we would take care of it the same way we do our personal homes. Just like we would not like to live in a messy and dirty house, we should not also allow our streets and every other public places to be covered in littering trash. By cleaning up, I showed my son that taking responsibility is not only cleaning after ourselves alone but engaging in general cleanup regardless of who must have caused the trash. It's simply about fixing or repairing problems even if we didn't create them.
2.) setting a positive example : children learn perfectly by what they see with their own naked eyes. If I am to tell my son to clean the environment alone without doing it myself first and actually have him watch me as I engage in the cleaning, then my words will mean nothing to him. But when he sees me pick up pure water nylons, plastic bottles and every littering trash from the streets and properly disposing them, infact the lesson becomes more alive in his mind and heart and it will never be easily forgotten.
3.) respect and appreciation for the neighborhood : A clean environment and street is not just about looking nice. Is far more than that - it's about facilitating and promoting appreciation and respect for the members of the community and in extension the community members will also show respect and honor to you for helping them clean their environment. So my son realized that when we actually clean up, we are showing respect not only for the neighborhood but also for the people living around us.
4.) little actions but huge impact: When we started cleaning at first, it was as if we were not making any progress. But gradually our trash bags finally filled up, my son excitement increased intensely. He started pointing at trash even before I could even see it, he was very eager to help. It was indeed little actions but an enormous impact
5.) the ability of contributing without expecting anything back: Apart from the reward attached to engaging in @cleanplanet exercise which is definitely fun. However, the beauty of @cleanplanet community is that it teaches us to give out something bigger to than ourselves. My son was engaging in the @cleaning and @sanitation of the planet because it felt right. My son has learnt that the greatest satisfaction in life comes from good deeds, such as delibrate cleanup and sanitation of our neighborhood streets, even if we got nothing in return.
A FUTURE LESSON FOR MY SON
Immediately we were through cleaning our environs. I looked at my son and saw something in his glowing eyes -- self - confidence filled with happiness, awareness and a sense of accomplishment.
He understood now that keeping our surroundings and environments sparkling clean( so to speak) is not just an individual's duty but it is a general job for everyone as long as we all are living on these planet earth.
