A Glimpse Of Kindness

My mom is a nurse, and having a mom like that makes hospital visits a frequent occurrence. Sometimes, my siblings and I would go to the hospital after school, and other times my mom would take us to her workplace on weekends. We had plenty of "Take Your Kid to Work" days. My memories are a bit hazy and I don’t remember the first time I followed my mom to her workplace. However, she doesn’t like to leave her kids at home, particularly my brother, on weekends. She always feared that he’d cause trouble before she got back. On the other hand, my dad allowed us to go with my mom to her workplace, but there was something he didn’t like- night shifts. My dad didn’t like the idea of my mom taking us for night shifts. He liked us to sleep in the house. But my brother enjoyed night duties. He’d sneak up the back door and follow my mum. Unfortunately, the day I tried to do the same, my dad caught me and dragged me back inside.

When it comes to making memories in the hospital, I have a jar loaded with sweet memories from my childhood. On the other hand, I’ve also got a jar loaded with bitter memories. From nurses who do not know a tiny bit of work ethic, to impatient doctors who just want to get everything over with, and everything in between, I have had many bittersweet experiences in the hospital because I have been there quite a number of times. When I was younger, the reason I went to the hospital was to follow my mom and have fun with my siblings in her office, but after I graduated from high school, I started visiting the hospital frequently for other reasons which I am not willing to share here.

It is difficult for me to choose my best experience in the hospital- I’ve got so many on my list. For the sake of the INLEO monthly prompt, I’ll share the one time a nurse said and did something nice to me. Usually, most of the nurses are either rude or impatient and do not care about their patients, but that one was different.

After I graduated from high school, I started feeling “funny” from time to time. At first, I didn’t care to tell my mom about it, but when it got way more serious, I told her. So, we booked an appointment with the doctor. On the day of the appointment, I went to the doctor’s office, where he asked me a series of questions; when did you start feeling funny? On a scale of 1-10, rate how you feel, do you lift heavy stuff? After I answered all his questions, he wrote some notes on paper and handed them to me. He asked me to go see a cardiologist, get an X-ray, and show the results to another doctor who specialized in that field. I couldn’t read what the doctor wrote on the paper. It looked like gibberish, but my mom could.

That day, I booked an appointment with the cardiologist department and did an X-ray. The result came out after a few days. Then I took it to the doctor. This time, the doctor was a lady in her mid-20s. She looked really young and beautiful. I told her everything and she said “This Ex-Ray result will determine the next step.” When she said that, my heart skipped two beats and I started to shake. She noticed it. She brought the result out and checked it, before she could say anything, I blurted out “Is anything wrong with it? Am I fine?” She smiled and dropped the result. My hands were still shaking. She saw them.

Instead of telling me the result, she asked me a different question: “Do you watch movies?” I was surprised. What has this question got to do with my X-Ray? Just tell me and let me know my fate. After the look of confusion cleared on my face, I told her I did and that anime and cartoons are my favorite genres. Apparently, she was a fan, too. How often do you find doctors who are fans of anime and cartoons? We started talking about one cartoon to another anime and back. Our giggles led to squeaky laughs and mini arguments. At some point, I totally forgot about my X-Ray result. After we had both run out of what to say and there was silence, she took up the results again, dropped it, and said “You are fine.” She prescribed some drugs and asked me to buy them. Her handwriting was way better than the doctor’s.

I have made so many happy memories in the hospital, but this one still lives rent-free in my head. I liked that unlike other nurses, she did something really nice for me.

Thanks for reading.

My grandmother was a nurse and then a physiotherapist and she was astonished to see the behavior of some nurses and doctors when she visited the hospital where she had worked, because they shouted in the corridors with no consideration for the patients.

I have witnessed these terrible behaviors many times. It is sad. Really sad.

It's nice you found a caring nurse, I just don't like hospitals. We had bad experiences with my dad and brother at the hospital.

I’ve had many bad experiences.
I’m sorry to hear that you’ve also been there.
Thanks for stopping by.

Thank you very much
