Although it's believed that Christmas and New Year's provide a special kind of happiness, spending time with my loved ones in the village is, in my opinion, the best part of this joyous season. I look forward to going back to my birthplace of Akanu Ohafia in Abia State every December because it's like entering a world full of love, laughter, and treasured memories. There is nothing like the beauty of home. Sitting with my grandmother, hearing her recite memories from her childhood, and laughing at the jokes she effortlessly tells brings a certain warmth. She constantly manages to elevate even the most commonplace situations. I also cherish the food she makes.
Every bite of her food reminds me of the love and effort mom puts into making meals for us, and the smell of her cooking permeates the house. Her cooking tastes better than anything else; it's heartfelt, fresh, and honest. Going to the stream to get water is one of the most instinctive experiences I value. The trip there, the sound of the water splashing over the rocks, and the camaraderie of individuals who come to get water all have a soothing quality.
It serves as a reminder of how lovely and uncomplicated life can be when the bustle of the city is removed.
With masquerades roaming the streets, drumming, and dancing to delight everyone, December in Akanu Ohafia is usually a joyous time of year.It is an experience I wouldn't trade for anything because of the vivid colours, the excitement, and the crowd's laughter. The whole community comes to life during this time, and you get a strong sense of belonging. There is a certain allure to the new year. In addition to the festivities, it's a time for making plans, thinking back on the previous year, and deciding to improve.
It offers me the opportunity to make up for past transgressions and a new feeling of purpose and hope. This time is made even more special by being in the village with family and friends. In Akanu Ohafia, Christmas and New Year's are more than simply holidays to me; they serve as a reminder of the basic pleasures in life, the love of family, andand the beauty of tradition. It’s a period I always look forward to, knowing it will fill my heart with memories to cherish forever.
