The hospital is a place where people go to be safer when ill than being in their homes, which is their comfort zone, but then what if a place they consider a safe space wasn't safe at all due to the activities of some of the medical personnel? I have heard about cases where some mishaps happened in the hospital due to the carelessness of the medical personnel. Some patients lost their lives in the process and those who didn't were left with one or more diseases they had to battle with all their life.
In a hospital setting, we have several workers such as doctors, nurses, therapists, surgeons, cleaners, and errand boys or girls, to mention but a few. They all have different functions they perform at the hospital. Each of them is expected to perform his or her duty diligently because they deal with human lives, but it's so unfortunate that we have scenarios where some of the patients feel uncomfortable with the way they are being treated.
Due to my experience as a nurse and what I've been privileged to hear from patients, nurses are the worst medical practitioners in a hospital setting. What I don't understand is where they got those inhuman activities from, it's not in the ethics of nursing and etiquette of a nurse. As a nurse, I sometimes go against my colleagues for a patient when I see that such a patient is being treated unfairly. It saddens the heart to see a patient who is unwell and trusts the hospital setting for his or her wholeness being treated like a piece of trash. Some nurses are so uncultured and have loose mouths. A patient who confidentially shares his or her secrets with you thinks you are in the best position to help him or her, but instead of keeping it a secret, which it should be, it will become a subject matter in a talk with no solution, just making jest of such individual.
I've heard people say nurses are wicked, but it isn't so; we aren't trained to be wicked; those wicked ones trained themselves to be. Being a nurse doesn't mean to act irrationally without human feelings. In this part of the world, Nigeria to be precise, I don't know how patients are treated in other countries that I've not been to, but here, nurses have bad attitudes towards patients, although not everywhere, but the majority of them are. I remember when my mom was pregnant with our last child of the family; on the day of her delivery, I followed her to the hospital, and for some time, she was asked to walk around to ease her delivery. In the process of this, the nurses at the reception were laughing and passing different comments, I was so angry that I needed to walk up to them and address them. This shouldn't be; if it hadn't happened in my presence, I wouldn't have believed such things were happening, but then no measures were being taken to correct these nonchalant attitudes of the nurses.
One other experience I had with nurses was when my friend was ill and was hospitalized. She was on a drip, and the one given to her overnight finished as early as 6 am; I went to inform the nurse on duty and to come to check the patient out, which took her almost 30 minutes. Afterward, she came and couldn't greet the patient good morning or ask how she was feeling; she removed the cannula in a very annoying way which caused the patient to start bleeding from where the cannula was removed. I was so angry at how poor their service was at that hospital, which got me asking myself, "Am I not a nurse?" I've never treated any of my patients so badly. I just had to get her discharged because such a nurse could hurt her more. She did that without feeling remorseful, I was just shocked to see the level at which our nurses are being so unprofessional and lack good morals. Some nurses will talk so rudely to patients without caring how those words make them feel. This shouldn't be a good way professional and well-trained medical practitioners should behave, but then, in a developing country like mine, anything is acceptable.
In my opinion, adequate measures should be put in place to check nurses' activities and behaviors in the hospital. There should be a good professional relationship between nurses and their patients. Patients shouldn't be treated like they are not humans just because they are unwell. During this trying time when they needed all the love they could get, it would be so inappropriate for the nurses to add to their worries. The hospital setting should be put in order by putting the nurses on their toes to work efficiently and acceptably.
Thanks for your time, and your comments will be appreciated.
