While others are in their winter, here in Africa, we are in our dry season. This is the season when we are most affected by diseases. Anyone who coughs can spread infections easily, and sneezing, along with many other contagious diseases, can travel through the air.
I am a victim. Since morning, when I stepped into the market, I have been sneezing and have a runny nose that hasn’t stopped. I also feel weak and dizzy. However, I’m not going to let it pull me down—I will fight it.
I noticed that everyone in the market today is showing the same symptoms, and they are not taking precautions to contain it. Many people sneeze with their mouths wide open into the air without covering them, thereby spreading bacteria into the dry air. This makes it easy for others to breathe in the bacteria, leading to an outbreak of the disease.
This is how viruses spread. This is how zombie apocalypses start—at least in the movies—but it shows how easily diseases can spread. We need to be careful in crowded areas, especially during the dry season. Everyone needs to take precautionary measures to avoid breathing in harmful bacteria.
Wearing a nose mask is the best remedy during the dry season. Those who already have symptoms should minimize contact with the public to help contain the spread.
