Gambling.. My thoughts on the Topic

~ Mike McDermott

Gambling... This is a topic that if raised anywhere would have a large number of responses. There are those against it, those for it and those amused by it.
Lot's of thoughts would be shared but I'll just share mine here with some quotes and my thoughts relating to that quote.

"Gambling is not a vice, it's an expression of our humanness. We gamble, some do it at the gaming table, some do not. You play, you win. You play, you lose, you play." ~ Jeannette Winterson

There are plenty of people who look at gambling with such a disgusting eye. People who are quick to call out everybody who as much as makes a prediction on a match or sport as bad eggs and gamblers disgust me so much.

First of all, I hate name calling. Then I hate the idea of someone coming up with a finite decision on something without knowing all the facts.

When I first started betting. I was a young lad who was looking for ways to make extra money. I wasn't stupid, I knew that betting isn't how to make money.
Actually, there's a quote I always say. "Betting is simply a fun way of losing money."
Regardless, I was also intrigued at how so many people earn from choosing the amount of goals a team would score or who would win a match.

I thought I'd try my luck. My luck didn't try😂
Despite my losses, I did learn some things there.
First of all, it was no easy quick rich scheme, nor was gambling evil.
What made gambling look bad is how the people who engage in gambling gamble.

"Gambling is not about how well you play the games; it's about how well you handle your money." ~ V.P. Pappy

There are numerous tales about how people who gamble get bankrupt, have multiple debts, commit suicide and so on...
I know there are multiple memes and jokes about them as I've had my own share of laughs reading and hearing them.
With some of the people who I've gambled with though, my eyes have opened from the first ignorant assumption that every gambler is out hunting for money.

"I like to play blackjack. I'm not addicted to gambling. I'm addicted to sitting in a semi-circle." - Mitch Hedberg

From the people I play and I've come in contact with, I've realized that most of them use gambling as just a way of killing time, a social activity.
As most folks play games online, they look at sports predictions.
So many of them have their main extra jobs, amd just 2-10% of their income goes into gambling..
Everybody has that dream of the grand audit, but everyone is realistic and knows that it's almost impossible.

"The key to Winning is never bet more than you can afford to lose" ~ Arnold Rothstein

Most times when I see stories about people committing suicide over a debt accumulated due to gambling, I shake my head in amusement and disbelief.
I do know that it happened quote frequently, but I just can't imagine how one would bet something that if he loses he won't be able to live without.
Every money lost is something that hurts, unless its money you've already assumed and claimed gone.
I mentioned how the people who I know that gamble always bet between 1-10% of their income.
I bet only 1-2%, that way, I can label any money that I've sent to my betting account as gone money.
Gone meaning it's gone to betting, and of something comes back out it's not going back in!!

Because of just how unpredictable it is, there's no way, no reason, no meaning in getting a loan and putting it in for a gamble in hopes of doubling or tripling the money.
You're just out to kill yourself.

"You can't win if you can't play."

I mentioned earlier that I started gambling to make money, till now I still feel that way and I approach every prediction as though that might be the legendary grand audit.
The only difference is that I'm loads smarter now, there's nothing that'd make betting be the reason I go bankrupt (if I ever, hopefully not.)

Every person who has and is betting has that dream of the grand audit, winning millions with pennies and cents. It has happened to some, it wouldn't happen to all.

"The odds are always against you, but that's what makes the rewards so great."

Some people have addictive personalities. Unfortunately they may not learn they are addictive until they are hooked on something.

My husband gambles every week. But it's not really gambling. It's a friendly poker game with the same guys. There is an element of chance, and an element of skill.

Years past, when he played in Las Vegas, he said something like your quote at the top...you never want to be the fish at the table. Sometimes, people are too proud to recognize they are the fish :) He knew when he was the fish. He would just leave.

Gambling is like alcohol. In moderation, not too bad. The challenge is to keep it in moderation.

Couldn't have phrased it better myself
