Cleaning my environment

in CLEAN PLANET9 days ago

My compound, where I currently live, is neither cemented nor interlocked, and the challenge we often face, especially during the rainy season, is clearing the grass in the compound. Sometimes, due to a lack of time on my part or that of the other neighbors, we allow the grass to grow very well, very robust, before we finally have the chance to clear it off.

For me, I do not wait for co-tenants to assemble before clearing. I do it once I am free, and I use a cutlass because that is the only working tool available in the compound. The cutlass is not well-sharpened, but we make use of it that way. It is very blunt, and we have never thought of sharpening it because, in reality, the ground in the compound is very soft. The grass, although big, is also soft, and with just a strike of the blunt cutlass, it is easily uprooted from the ground.

The clearing process is very simple. I clear off the grass from the roots, depending on how deeply rooted they are. After that, I use a rake to gather them into a corner and allow them to dry. If it is the dry season or if the weather is sunny, I leave them on the spot unraked so that the sun can hit them properly and dry them out, preventing them from springing up again. After they're well dried, I pack them away. The sun also heats the soil and weakens any little grass that was not touched by the cutlass. Even if they attempt to grow again, they will experience a lot of difficulty before springing up. This is why I love to check the weather very well before embarking on the clearing because it would be very bad if I cleared the grass and then rain fell afterward. In such a case, the grass would have an easy chance to grow back quickly.

There was a time I considered using pesticides to kill off the grass, but there were going to be issues, especially regarding who would pay for the pesticide, because my co-tenants are the type that do not want to get involved in any monetary contribution. This is why we have been doing it the manual way—the local way. However, it does get tiring sometimes because the space is quite big.

As for my room, this is where I am most particular. I live alone, and even at that, I sweep it on a daily basis—sometimes even twice a day if I notice sand on the floor. I do not like my feet touching sand on the floor. I mop every weekend, and as for my dustbin, I empty it into the general bin we have in the compound whenever it is full. Most times, I do this on weekends, but if I notice that it is full even on a weekday, I take it and empty it into the general drum we use in the compound.
