How It All Began.

Towards the end of my secondary school education, our school’s principal enforced a “no litter rule” with severe punishment for those who tried to break this rule. Subsequently, she supported the fruition of this rule by increasing the number of waste bins in the school compound but the students weren't having it. We (myself included) all thought that this rule was absolutely absurd. “Why would she want to put us through such stress”? We asked no one in particular.

Two weeks in and the school compound was always still littered with trash of all sorts ranging from plastics, papers to polyethene bags. This behavior came to an abrupt end when a student was used as a scapegoat to set an example. This young boy who fell victim to the prying eyes of the compound master was placed on sanitation duty for a week. I'd like to establish that my secondary school compound was large and the employed janitors found it hard to keep up with their jobs every single day. Now, imagine a student doing all these tasks alone for seven days (he lived in the school's hostel). All I can remember is that the once chubby and healthy looking young boy became a shadow of himself by the end of the punishment. This was enough to frighten a bunch of students who became pace setters. Initially we stopped littering as a form of eye service but along the line a majority of the students fit snuggling into the “no litter” gloves.

Over the years, I've grown accustomed to keeping my home and my environment clean and one of the steps I take is always ensuring my bed is properly aired and neatly arranged once I wake up in the morning. If my bed isn't neatly laid, my chances of having a bad day would be on the rise. It sounds weird but it's true. There are numerous reasons why I do this but first, my bed is my favorite place in my room and I'm obliged to take proper care of my bed. Second, a neat bed always always improves the aesthetics of a room and its cleanliness by extension. Also, one can say that I adhere strongly to both the literal and idiomatic meanings of the saying “as you lay your bed, so you must lie in it”.

The next step I take is putting items in their rightful places. This particular act is never easy, especially when living with family or friends. There's always going to be one person who never returns items to their rightful place and if this continues for a few days, the home becomes a mess. Be that as it may, I painstakingly try to return items to their rightful spots in the house and by doing so, reducing the build-up of a mess and decluttering open spaces daily.

Due to how busy I get throughout the week, I create a personal cleaning routine. On certain days of the week, I carry out certain tasks, for example, taking out the trash, clearing out cobwebs, disinfecting high-touch areas like door knobs, sweeping and mopping can be done on a certain day while dirty clothes can be attended to on another day. This way, the workload isn't enormous and I still get the time to carry out other activities of daily living.

For a while now, I've been an advocate for upcycling and recycling items. First because I love to take unwanted items and turn them into valuable items, second, because it goes a long way in reducing waste from the environment. I cannot list the number of items I have recycled over the years but one of my most valuable upcycling experiments is using plastic bottles and cement bags to start a sustainable garden which is still thriving till date. This has helped to drastically reduce the plastic and cement bag waste in my environment.

One final thing I do to ensure the cleanliness of my environment is bulk purchasing. How? By buying items in bulk, the amount of polyethene bags I accumulate reduces in comparison to buying one item at a time. There was a time when I had a bag filled with shopping bags because I always purchased items individually but that bag isn't as packed anymore because I've come to realize that bulk purchases not only reduce waste but they save time, energy and money.

Maintaining a clean home and environment is a personal responsibility that benefits us and those around us. By taking care of our living spaces, we're not only protecting our physical health but also our mental health.

I agree with you, Putting things in their rightful position is always a chore 😩😂

An intense chore that requires an optimum level of determination 😂

Great post. If only more people can learn to keep their environment clean, the rate of environmental pollution will drastically reduce. There's no doubt that a clean and organized environment improves one's mental and physical health. It can also boost mood and make one calm and relaxed.

I like your garden. I use paint bags for planting too, and it's been a wonderful experience.
