Harvesting The Bottle Gourd From Our School Garden

Hello Hivians! How's your remaining days before 2025? I hope we are all well and be more hopeful in the year of Jubilee. Now, I invite you to read this short blog on my harvesting moment of the bottle gourd from our garden.

Last time, I shared here my cucumber harvest from our school garden. I have mentioned that on the following week I could harvest the bottle gourd. During our year-end party last Saturday, December 21, 2024, I harvested three bottle gourds that weighed more than one kilogram each. My co-teacher, Lhors, helped me in harvesting because she wanted to ask one so that she could cook it at home.

The products of hardwork

Before the Christmas break of our learners, the group who was assigned to this vine garden sprayed the calcium phosphate to the flowers. It helps to develop more vegetables.

As we checked the garden area, my other co-teacher, Adrian, asked if he could ask for one bottle gourd and a cucumber. I told him to check on the cucumber side because it still has products, but the plant needs to be replaced sooner to have more healthy vegetables. I was supposed to give some to the learners who helped maintain this garden, but since they're already on vacation, I just shared it with my colleagues.

Every time we have a harvest, I weigh it for record purposes. Because there is a needed report on the harvested products from our garden every month. When I weighed the two big bottle gourds, I was doubtful of the result, which was 1.5 kg. When I checked it, there's a portion of the scale that has a paper or something that needs to be out. So I just weighed it one by one, and the result was that each of the gourds weighed more than one kilogram.

There were still remaining vegetables that could be harvested the following week. And when I visited the school today, I got one gourd and a cucumber. My wife was so happy because we can eat a fresh, healthy and organic vegetable. She sautéed it, added with the lechon paksiw given by one of my learners who had a feast yesterday. Planting does not only end in sowing seeds. It needs maintenance with the use of organic fertilizers and pesticides. In our case, I have shared it here with my last agri-post that we created fish amino acids, calcium phosphate, and the insect attractant.

How am I feeling about the result?

I'm satisfied with the result of the learners hardwork. I hope the next grade level whose lessons are about agri-fishery arts will also learn to love farming. At least they can start it at school and might bring their learnings home. They can plant in their backyards and harvest fresh and healthy products. I'm sure they can be proud of themselves.

That's all for this content. Thank you for reading. Till next time, agri-minds.
