GROW AND HARVEST OUR OWN PEANUTS

LIFE ON A FARM IS A SCHOOL OF PATIENCE. YOU CAN'T HURRY THE PLANT OR MAKE AN OX IN TWO DAYS. ~Haneri Alain Liogier

Hello, Beautiful People on Hive!

Today let me share our peanut farm journey from planting down to harvesting. Growing up on a farm, I always love to help my mother in farming. Last July, my mom and I decided to plant peanut seeds in an area just near our house. We have been planting peanuts before and a few days ago we harvested our crops.

Peanuts are easy to grow in places where there is warm weather. There are five seed coat colors but the most common seed coat colors are white, red, and maroon.

How are peanuts planted?

Land preparation
First, we prepared the land for planting. Living in the countryside of the Philippines, farmers like me usually use carabao to help us plow the field. Since we don't have this animal, we hired our neighbor to use his carabao to plow the land. It is also very important to choose sandy soil for peanuts since they can grow well when the soil is loose. Don't forget to make canals so that when the rain comes, water can pass through.

Seeds Preparation
These are the peanuts that we planted. Make sure to dry them by exposing these to the rays of the sun for 2-3 days. Then remove the outer cover and put insecticide/pesticide before planting.

Planting
After plowing, mom and I started planting. The distance would be about 50-80 cm. Then, dig a small hole about 2 inches down and put 2 seeds in each hole, and cover. It took us 2 days of planting since the area was quite big which is approximately 600 square meters and we couldn't bear the scorching heat of the sun as well.

After a week, the seedlings were already visible. We didn't apply fertilizers to our peanuts. These plants are legumes that fix their own nitrogen in the soil if rhizobium bacteria are present.

After about 2 weeks, weeds were already visible so we needed to uproot the weeds before they will have flowers. When flowers can be seen already we are not allowed to touch the plants so that the growth of the fruits will not be interrupted.
Harvesting
After 4 months of waiting, it is time to harvest them. Several signs will tell you that peanuts are ready to be harvested. Make sure to count the month from the time you planted the peanuts. If it's already been more than 3 months, they are ready to be harvested. Moreover, you can also uproot 1 plant and check if the pods are already mature.

Our goats ate the leaves of the uprooted peanut plants. Typhoon Paeng came so we didn't finish harvesting in a day. Luckily, after 2 days of stormy weather, I got to help my mother and aunt in harvesting the peanuts.

We harvested a total of 70 kilograms of peanuts. 1/4 of these will be planted again.

You can also grow your own peanuts. Have a great day everyone!
