Nostalgia, Fames and Random Updates

in Proof of Brain4 days ago

I've recently done some more mediocre and mundane things in my life so I think it's time for another random life update. Ready to check out what I've been up to the past few days, weeks and month? Here we go!

When your vacuum cleaner's a drama queen

Our robot vacuum cleans the upstairs floor of our home on a weekly schedule and sometimes it send us messages if it runs into issues.🙃 On this particular day it texted that it needs our attention because it's stuck near a cliff.

"A cliff, oh no! 😧 don't worry little vacuum cleaner, we're coming. We'll save you."

It's done this before and we typically come home to it stuck on the stairs with one wheel hanging over edge. On this particular day the cliff happened to be the bottom of our table 🙄. Seems a bit dramatic to me. I think our vacuum is a bit of a diva.

We've recently changed the name of the device from "Roomba" to "Alfred." It's slightly more funny to gets messages saying that "Alfred needs our attention." It's a minor joy in life for us.

Another Kick of Nostalgia

If you've been following me for a while you may recall my nostalgia posts where I discuss different books and toys that I had as a kid. The biggest example is my hunt for Goosebumps books. Well I recently found another childhood book series that I read as a kid. It was being sold online. The books are called Animorphs, which it's a sci-fi series about a parasitic alien species that takes over people's minds and a group of kids develop the ability to transform into animals in order to combat them and save the world.

When it came up in my general scrolling I was like "Damn! I forgot about those books." Naturally I had to buy them and start reading them right away. I bought them second hand so they were pretty cheap, working out to under $3 per book. Some of the series is missing, including the very last book (the worst one to be missing really) but I figure I have time to find it before I read the rest of them.

So far I've read the first two books and they are an easy and fun read. I like that I can whip through them pretty quick on a weekend and that they don't take a lot of brain power. Did you read these books as a kid or have you heard of them?

Finished Recursion

I started reading Recursion by Blake Crouch quite some time ago and I just finished it recently. I hadn't been reading much lately and got a little side tracked with the Animorphs books so it took longer than it should have. Recursion was a interesting cerebral read that really popped off in the last 1/3rd of the story. It was a bit of a mind fuck in some places and really comes together nicely in the end. I don't want to say too much about it so as not to spoil it, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes cerebral books or stories about time travel. Have you read it?

Pictures Framed

Recently we got a couple of art pieces professionally framed. For my birthday a few months ago my wife bought me this 1920's French advertisement for mints that I said I liked. We took it to a local shop to get it framed a few weeks ago. I originally thought that I wanted a simple and modern black frame with a white matte but the shop brought out a few other options in case I wanted to see something a little different. Here is a "wild card" option to check out they said, a dark horse to consider.

I'm glad that they made the suggestion because right away we decided that a gold frame with black matte with a little green hint to it looked so much better. It was much more interesting than what I had originally selected and I think it really makes the print stand out a lot more.

We hung the picture in our pantry. What do you think? Would a black frame and white matte have been better or do you like the gold and black?

After getting the picture back we decided to have a painting of my wife grandma reframed in a similar fashion. Originally the painting had a black frame with stark white matte and we never really thought that it suited the paintings style. It made it look modern but also cheap in a way, and we really wanted the painting to look more vintage.

We went with a gold frame again and a more beige colored matte and we really think that it looks so much better. It looks more timely to me. What do you think?

MCM Furniture

We've been looking out for a MCM teak modular wall unit for some time now. We look online and at a few MCM antique stores in town. We really like the Poul Cadovius systems but the vintage ones are pretty rare and/or very expensive so they are relatively hard to come by. We recently found this Vintage Reff unit though, which has a little bit of damage on the poles but is otherwise quite nice.

Reff isn't as good a company as Cadovius but we are pretty pleased with the unit we found for the space in our living room. Hanging it was a bit of a pain. It took several trips to the hardware store to find the right plugs required to secure one of the poles to the wall where it missed a stud. But other than that it was a fairly simple process. We still have to decorate it with books and plants and stuff, which may take some time, but overall we are happy how its looking so far.

Well, thats it for my life update. Until next time, thanks for stopping by.
