Off the east coast of Tanzania lies the Zanzibar archipelago; the two main islands are Unguja and Pemba. Unguja is the most populated, and is where you will likely stay should you visit there.
Captured in this photo is a traditional sailing and fishing boat called a dhow. Zanzibar is still very underdeveloped compared to the rest of the world, and the local folks still predominantly make use of traditional methods, practices and equipment to earn a living. There are of course many, many fishermen, and most make use of a dhow to sail towards the coral reefs to fish and perhaps even take visitors snorkeling. During low tide on the east coast (pictured here) the water retreats for kilometers on end, and many dhows are moored in the very shallow water on the white sands.
After several years, when a dhow has aged and can no longer be used for sailing, it is often upcycled and used to make gorgeous furniture pieces such as chairs and bars!
A little side note on this photo - before anyone starts thinking I captured a UFO in the background there - this side of the island is very well known for kitesurfing 😁.
