Umbrel Home Unboxing - Setting Up Bitcoin Core

Yesterday I received my much waited Umbrel Home device for which I could quickly rig up my own Bitcoin Core node among other things. It runs the Umbrel OS and has many cool apps that you can access via a web interface.

It is an attractive looking piece of kit and comes with 16gb of RAM and a 2TB drive which is enough to store the Bitcoin blockchain.

The unit is delivered in a cool Umbrel branded box and then inside you can see the contents on the main picture I shared above. What I like about this mini-PC compared to the other that I have is that the power unit is charged by a USB-C port which is very hand and also much lower power usage too.

It has an ethernet port but you can also connect via wifi if you need too. It had 3 USB ports on the other side too.

I am just really loving how great this Umbrel Home looks plus how great the OS is. It is so user friendly and easy to access. It is a dream. Really hats off to the Umbrel boys here for this top notch solution.

Not only that, there are loads of cool apps you can install and play around with too!

If you are planning on running nodes, wallets or anything else, there is probably an app on here for you to use. So far I have just installed Bitcoin Core and it is currently syncing.

It is pretty amazing that you can get it running with only a few clicks.

Once installed, I started syncing it right away and after a few hours it was still 38% of the way through. Hopefully by tomorrow it might be finished and up to date.

When I setup my next node, I probably will have a go at Bootstrapping it, so that it can sync up much faster.

Thanks for reading.

2TB is a very good storage space. I think the packaging is cool. A lot of gadgets really wants to make a difference with the packaging, it's good to see you're up and running with just a few clicks.

@tipu curate

Thanks, it is a good amount of storage to not need upgrading for a few years. I really like the Box and the Umbrel OS is super easy to use.

Thanks for your support.

Thanks for your support

Interesting. What are you going to do with it? How will you benefit from it? Is it worth a box like this for BTC Core? Is the Core just storing blocks from scratch? I don't know exactly what it is, so I'm asking.

The benefits are that you can secure the network and protect your privacy by validating your own transactions. It is also a great home server with lots of apps to use!

It's only for your transactions, then, so you're a miner in a way?

No, its just a noderunner. I can also validate other peoples transactions too.

And you don't get any reward for it?

No, it is mostly to secure the protocol.

Hi, I like your new acquisition, I hope to have one very soon, nice post my friend.👍👍👍

Thanks friend, I can certainly recommend the umbrel, it is a great piece of kit

Yuhh great kit! So hope soon we'll read from you that you got your BTC!😉🤞

haha I wish my friend. however , I keep on:

That's pretty cool. I have never heard of the Umbrel OS before. Is it some derivative of Linux?

It is built on Debian. So far it looks pretty amazing.

That is really cool!
