Apenas nos mudamos a Esquel en el año 2002, nos enteramos de la lucha pacífica de una gran parte de la población en contra de la instalación de la megaminería en la región. Solo una semana después de llegar participamos de la primera marcha en la ciudad a favor del agua y en contra de la extracción a gran escala y a cielo abierto de minerales preciosos como el oro y la plata más otros no tan escasos ni valiosos como el plomo, por ejemplo.
En esa lucha que es constante y debe perseverar porque las compañías mineras no se rinden, está unida toda la provincia de Chubut, toda a excepción de algunos políticos, esos que siempre se encuentran en cualquier parte del mundo que velan más por sus intereses personales que por los de las personas que supuestamente representan, la excusa es siempre la misma: la minería es una actividad esencial para el crecimiento del país.
Es innegable que la minería es esencial para la actividad humana, es impensado creer que sin esos minerales la humanidad pudiera sobrevivir en las condiciones actuales, pero una cosa es la minería tradicional, controlable y más ecológica que la megaminería que es a todas luces contaminante, imposible de controlar y sin ninguna sustentabilidad.
La provincia de Chubut es especialmente vulnerable en cuanto al recurso más esencial para la vida: el agua. Si bien los sectores más cercanos a la Cordillera de los Andes estamos más al resguardo de la escases de agua, el resto de la provincia no y eso es debido a la estepa, un vasto territorio que ocupa más del 80% de toda la provincia y es particularmente seco debido justamente a la barrera natural que crean las altas montañas que no deja pasar la humedad del Pacífico hacia el este. Se puede observar fácilmente, apenas nos alejamos unos pocos kilómetros de las ciudades cordilleranas, el paisaje cambia, los árboles y el verde desaparecen y son reemplazados por plantas achaparradas, que solo crecen en zonas de escasa humedad.
En ese contexto solo el río Chubut lleva agua y humedad desde la cordillera hasta el Atlántico, como todo lo demás ríos que nacen en las montañas, en sus nacientes y por algunos kilómetros su caudal es suficiente, principalmente en los meses de deshielo y lluvias donde pueden caer unos 1000 milímetros en promedio, luego se convierte en un río de estepa, lento, bajo y de poco caudal, solo unos 200 milímetros de agua de lluvia anuales aporta ese sector, bajando dramáticamente cuanto más se acerca a su desembocadura, inclusive el agua que provee a las ciudades costeras suele ser escasa en época estival.
No hay en toda la provincia otros ríos significativos que aporten agua desde la cordillera hasta el Atlántico.
Si la megaminería se instalara en la estepa necesitará grandes cantidades de agua además de otros elementos muy contaminantes. El río se vería totalmente comprometido en esas circunstancias y no estoy agregando el problema del cambio climático que seguramente provocará mayores estragos en el futuro.
Las asambleas, las marchas y otras actividades contra la megaminería no descansan. Nos va la vida misma en ello y es por ello que con este panorama afirmamos que el agua es más valiosa que el oro.

It is undeniable that mining is essential for human activity, it is unthinkable to believe that without these minerals humanity could survive in current conditions, but one thing traditional mining is controllable and more ecological than mega-mining, which is clearly polluting, impossible to control, and without any sustainability.
The province of Chubut is especially vulnerable in terms of the most essential resource for life: water. Although the sectors closest to the Andes Mountains are more protected from water scarcity, the rest of the province is not, and this is due to the steppe, a vast territory that occupies more than 80% of the entire province and It is particularly dry due precisely to the natural barrier created by the high mountains that do not allow moisture from the Pacific to pass to the east. In this context, only the Chubut River carries water and humidity from the mountains to the Atlantic, like all other rivers that rise in the mountains, in its sources and for a few kilometers its flow is sufficient, mainly in the months of thaw and rain where It can fall about 1000 millimeters on average, then it becomes a steppe river, slow, low and with little flow, only about 200 millimeters of rainwater per year contributes to that sector, falling dramatically the closer it gets to its mouth, including The water that supplies coastal cities is usually scarce in summer.
There are no other significant rivers in the entire province that provide water from the mountains to the Atlantic.
If mega-mining is installed in the steppe, it will need large amounts of water in addition to other highly polluting elements. The river would be totally compromised in those circumstances and I am not adding the problem of climate change that will surely wreak greater havoc in the future.
Assemblies, marches, and other activities against mega-mining do not rest. Life itself depends on it and that is why with this panorama we affirm that water is more valuable than gold.
