I was alarmed when I saw the huge pending totals that were starting to show up on proofofbrain.io after the first payouts and power ups, but I was assured by @eonwarped that those were not accurate and would not payout that way.
I considered putting a limit on payouts just in case, but I decided not to worry about it because I thought the pending payout estimates were just way off. In hind sight, that was a really bad decision.
@no-advice was paying attention and seems to have voted an earlier comment before it payed out so that it was the first comment to receive rewards after the totals had been thrown off. His reward for this was over 30k tokens making him the biggest POB token holder!
I don't blame him for gaming the system or @eonwarped for thinking the problem was solved when it wasn't. I blame myself for not doing what could have been done to correct things.
@no-advice has offered to give the tokens back, but he powered them up when he got them so that would take a month to give those tokens back. He says he would curate quality content and not upvote his own posts in the mean time, which is really cool of him.
@eonwarped tells me that he can help me figure out the totals that were supposed to be going to the other posts and we can get those tokens to the posts that they were supposed to go to, so maybe the project can be saved, but a lot depends on @no-advice.
Now it seems there are two options - move forward with everything fucked up and see if we can fix it or restart. Honestly, I don't like either option and feel like doing neither, so I thought I would let everyone know what's going on and see what the community thinks should be done.
so now we get POB and POB classic ??? LOL
I say just let it ride and fix it for the future -
I think i read somewhere that BTC had a couple 'booboos' in the beginning and the devs just fixed the code but left the chain (balances) in the boo-boo'd state.
People lives are at 'stake' here - we can't/shouldn't just get a 'do over' - what do you think this is , a damn video game ??? ROFL
My 'complex solution' (referenced in my previous reply) actually involves something sorta like your POB and POB Classic comment. It involves a bifurcated token (two tokens that have the exact same circulation and issue at the exact same time to the exact same accounts, but serve dramatically different purposes).
After some quite lengthy dialogue today with @proofofbrainio on Discord, I was unable to convince him of the merits of the idea. However, he was good with presenting it to the tribe for some 'hive mind' consideration.
I'll try to post details sometime tomorrow.
It can be solved by doing an account mute to prevent the account from affecting the reward pool distribution until the tokens are burned or returned.
A delegation to another account can be done to compensate him in the meantime.
lol, I agree. We will do the best we can to fix it and let it ride into the future. I would much rather POB start out like BTC than like STEEM!
I feel like my brains have been sucked out of me, watching my 100's of thousands of POB leak away....
But how was that possible? 32k POB that's way huge.
Well that's a big RIP. I was trying to figure out why so few posts had thousands of POB payout on them :/
I noticed this potential exploit last night and alerted the 'powers that be'.
From my understanding of the rewards system (which I admit is still quite limited), the exploit could've been averted if the voting window (Vote Window Days parameter in scotbot) had been switched from the default (full window) to 5 or 6 days.
That was my recommendation late last night, anyways. That would have allowed downvoting and/or other mitigation measures to be put in place before the exploit became fully instantiated.
I have my own thoughts on how to 'fix' the problem now that it has occurred, which I will detail in a separate post.
In particular, I have two thoughts, a simple one about 'making whole' those whose pending rewards got wiped out by the exploit and a complex one about how to improve the overall POB system itself (to make it less susceptible to whales and bots dominating the voting process).
Stay tuned!
There are several ways it could have been averted. I noticed it before you alerted me and had already discussed it with @eonwarped and was assured that the payouts were just showing way off. Eon was obviously mistaken, but I can't dwell on that. We will move forward and do everything we can to make things right.
Do you have a link to that comment? I find the estimated rewards have dropped considerably. I was going to get over 1,000 POB for my latest post and now it dropped to a double digit value. I think it comes from people powering up so the stake has become more distributed suddenly.
Yeah, here is the comment:

@eonwarped is working on the settings and getting everything in order now. They are still not showing accurate, but he's telling me that we should be able to distribute the proper amounts based on the correct percentages and token emission rate and get the correct values to the posts. The correct values were the ones before everything got skewed so it should get corrected to that amount you were seeing before. Hopefully that's the case, but please just bear with us as we try to get everything sorted. I'll do my best to keep everyone updated.
One solution would be to mute his account. Grant him a reasonable delegation on another account until the tokens are returned or burned.
I considered that, but since he offered to return the tokens I didn't want to mute him. I didn't consider a delegation to another account. For now @eonwarped has slowed the issuance rate while he is powering down and is doing periodic manual distributions based on the correct issuance rate to all other accounts.
Averting a problem is always best but I guess staking that much rather than just dumping it immediately on the market is maybe the second best possibility. Assuming quality content is curated. Whether or not those rewards should also be returned is an ethics question I'll leave to philosophers.
I've already created MEME token and when the pandemic ends and I can get a job I'll invest some of my money into fully setting up a tribe for memes. Your experience is a learning lesson for me so I can avoid that same situation.
