To be alive is a continual, ongoing activity that has been shaped since the first moment of creation. Everything living, breathing things depend on life. If it did not exist then there would be no life. Therefore, life is a necessary feature that separates separate, non-living entities from those which do not, either due to the fact that such organisms have stopped self-sustaining functions, or simply because these functions have never been initiated and ceased in the first place. Without life, there would be no creation, no evolution, no survival, no reproduction, no evolution of higher life forms, and so on.
What is the meaning of life? The meaning of life is that which is determined by rational, incremental, conscious choices, which give rise to an increasingly satisfying and rewarding life experience over time. It is the meaning of life as it relates to our own existence. The meaning of life for philosophers is that which makes us uniquely ourselves, giving us dignity, respect, freedom, and the means for all the rewards that make life worth living. Philosophy is defined in the book by Jean Jacques origines as a systematized view of life that gives an account of reality and the reality of the world.
A common question asked about philosophy of life is what is its answer to, for example, the meaning of death. What is the answer to life's meaning, to the meaning of human life? What is the relationship between philosophy of life and philosophy of death? What is the proper relationship between philosophy of life and religion?
The answers to such questions are difficult to provide. Death is part of life and is inevitable. In a sense, philosophy of life could be seen as an attempt to understand and define the nature of life. We know that death is a fact of life, and we also know that there is something after life, something that makes life meaningful. But does philosophy of life offer answers to these questions?
The short answer is that philosophy of life can offer an answer to the meaning of life. It may offer answers to the question of why life is meaningful. In some cases, it might even offer an explanation as to how life comes to have meaning. For example, if the philosopher John Locke were to say that the life we have today is meaningless because we are attached to physical objects, this might be read as an answer to the question, Why is life meaningful?
Another possible answer to the question of why life has meaning could be provided by the philosopher John Locke. According to Locke, we are all born with some idea of what reality is, but this idea dies hard when a person loses his or her loved ones. With the loss of these persons, the idea of reality as we know it vanishes along with our attachments to these objects. Because we experience no sense of loss, it follows that the idea of reality as we experience it does not have any essence at all, and consequently, no purpose in our lives.
The most pessimistic of philosophers, Immanuel Nietzsche, believes that life is bad because philosophy has failed to provide answers to the questions of reason and faith. His ideas are very similar to those of the French philosopher, philosophers such as Leo Tolstoy and Jeanette Winfield. Nietzsche writes, "For all the answers of philosophy are vain--they always prove false before they are put into practice."
Philosophy of life might not offer answers to the questions of why is life meaningful. It might offer answers to the question, however, as to why a person suffers or does not suffer when the object of his or her affections passes away. In that case, the philosophy of life would still offer answers to the questions of why one exists and what one wants out of life. After all, a person's happiness is his or her own business, and that could only be known through philosophy. In the end, the true philosophy of life is one which recognizes that true happiness comes from the insight of reason and from the pursuit of happiness within the limits of the given framework of reality.
