Happiness is eternal. If you are getting happiness from materialistic things, that means you are not a very emotional person but the happiness what lies in finacial growth is momentary. The moment you purchase something, you will feel happy but after 2 days you will get bored and then you would want new things.
So it's not something that's stagnant in your life.
Whereas the happiness that you get by emotionally connecting to people, or doing something that makes other happy, that stays with you forever. That will give you moments to cherish all your life. Things break but people and memories stay with you forever.
