Hello, Lovely Hivers!
A big thank you to everyone for the massive support on my introduction post.
I really wanted to start my journey by sharing something that I think of alot & that has helped in a handful of ways. That is : having a mind like water.

What is Mind Like Water?

This is a concept I first came across in David Allen's bestselling book: Getting things done. There he defines Mind Like Water as

A mental and emotional state in which your head is clear, able to create and respond freely, unencumbered with distractions and split focus.

This may sound somewhat easy but believe it or not, it actually isn't. Most times we tend to live more in the past & the future than in the present moment. We're often mesmerising about a future we'd love to experience or grieving about the past mistakes we've made. This fills our heads with so much thoughts, most of which aren't needed.

These thoughts deprives us from staying in the moment & focusing on what really matters which is ; now. Furthermore depriving us from attaining a mind like water.

Why have a mind like water?

Simply because it lifts one off depressed state & promotes productivity. As David Allen explained in his book, having a mind like water is highly relatable to being able to identify what's truly under our control & letting go of unnecessary thoughts enabling us to do the things we set out to do.
David Allen gave an illustration:

When one throws a stone into a still water, the stone causes disturbance but after a while the water goes back to it's initial state.
This implies that one can't truly stop or control the initial rush of emotion when someone hurt us or does something wrong to us but the feelings we possess afterwards is completely up to us. We can choose to return to being happy or content just like the still water or stay upset.

That is why understanding that our mind is like a tool that we have control over is quite important. Our minds don't control us, just like our arms, we have complete control over our minds & we can decide what to think, what not to, what to feel & what not to. Easier said than done, I know

But every good thing in life comes with effort & learning to control our minds is worth every bit of it.

Why write on this?

I decided to write on this because I've been a slave to my mind for so long & it's a constant struggle from time to time to be in control & I'm sure alot of people can relate.
Sometimes we find it hard to get things done & achieve our goals simply because we cannot get in the right frame of mind

Setting goals is a well known ritual by now & it's going to be a new year in 2 days & alot of us have so many goals we'd want to achieve.
But, truth is we won't be able to achieve these goals if we don't have the right mindset or a mind like water.
Disappointments will come, unforeseen circumstances will take place but our ability to keep a steady & calm mind during the time of these challenges would help alot.

Being productive, being able to set a goal & work towards achieving it is a factor of our minds

Personally, I mostly find it hard to do the things I set out to do simply because my mind is not clear. My mind prefers the instant gratification of doing what isn't important to doing the actual work that'll put me closer to achieving the goals (causing procrastination).

But learning to stay in the now & having a
Mind-like-water is a great milestone in the journey to being productive & getting things done.

In Summary
  • We should learn to live in the moment & focus what really matter
  • We should learn to have a mind like water
  • Every good thing requires effort.

I absolutely agree. It begins in the mind and mindsets really matter particularly in difficulties. I love the 'mind like water' concept.

Sorry for the super late reply. But true! It's a super great concept
