Go For the Easy Wins Too!

In goal setting - go for the easy wins! When you set goals for yourself, you are laying out your plan of attack to achieve the results that you want. Goals must be specific and have a timeline; they also need a realistic timetable - in both time frames. By hammering home the importance of these fundamentals, you will set yourself up for success!

If you are new to goal setting, you have probably found that many of your goals seem very far out of reach. Sooner or later you are likely to give up and move on to the next idea or get sidetracked. This is a natural thing - even professionals get sidetracked sometimes - but it's important to resist the temptation and keep going.

The reason that it is tempting to get sidetracked is usually that you haven't laid out your plan. There is no need to set out elaborate goals that are impossible to achieve within a reasonable amount of time.

In goal setting, set out a preliminary plan of action. By laying out what needs to be done, you will be able to develop a clear sense of direction.

Don't set yourself up for failure by setting unrealistic expectations of how long it will take to accomplish all of your goals. (The truth is that most goals never get completed.) Instead, aim for realistic goals that you can easily accomplish within a reasonable amount of time. For example, if you want to lose ten pounds, set a goal of losing twenty pounds within a six-week period. That's reasonable!

There are many ways to set realistic expectations. You can use the "what if" approach. What if you could eat chocolate one day and cut out carbohydrates the next day? If you can do this, that is a good goal to shoot for. On the other hand, if you know that it is almost impossible to cut out carbohydrates completely, then realize that a lot of effort has to go into this as well - and that probably means you will need to work toward your goal for six months or more!

To help you develop goals that are more attainable, you can use some tricks of the trade. One of them is to list your short-term and long-term goals side by side. In this way, when you look at your plan, you can see what the easiest goals to set are. Or, you can just look at the big picture and see how many points it would take to get your ideal weight. Once you understand the concept, you will be better able to decide which goals to set your sights on.

Another trick to help you in goal setting - go for the easy wins too! This is especially useful if you already have a set of short-term and long-term goals lined up. If you do not have a clear idea of how much you want to get, but you know that you are on the right track, then you can start adding a little bit of wiggle room to each goal until you get there. For example, if you know that losing ten pounds is a major goal, but you also know that you only want to lose two pounds per week, then you can set yourself a goal of going for ten pounds over twenty days.

So, remember to always keep your short term and long-term goals straight and to set manageable milestones for each one. Don't set yourself up for failure! Finally, make sure you can monitor how you are doing with each goal - and make sure that they are all in your favor. If you take these three tips to heart when you are in goal setting, you will be well on your way to success. Remember to always go for the easy wins too!
