Yesterday was a first session of the year for our little jazz group known as The Moonshots. We have @purplesinger on piano, @daniellemurray on clarinet and Bob on flute. We were missing bassist Paul again. We pay for a few hours in a local rehearsal studio so we can make some noise.
I do not have to take too much gear as most of the drum kit is supplied. I bring along my snare drum and cymbals. They have nicer Tama kit than I do at home. I may have to upgrade my bass pedal.
We played a few tunes for the first time, so it is all a matter of finding our way with them. I am very much a beginner at jazz drumming, so I keep it very simple. I do get to use the brushes and that is a mental exercise in itself. My feet got to do much the same thing all afternoon, so I did not have to think too much about them.
There were a few opportunities for me to solo on a few bars, but that needs some work.
We do this for fun, but may well do some more open mics with our other musician friends. Those are an opportunity for me to accompany more people on drums.
The songs I have included are:
- Baby won't you please come home
- Aggravatin' Papa
- I wish I could feel how it feels to be free
Some Brits will recognise the last one as the theme of the Film show with Barry Norman.
Rock and roll!

It was good fun as usual. So cathartic to make a racket together....

The brushees always have a great tone and sound. Must be quite a changeup tho!
I'm still finding my way. All part of the fun. Nice to make a racket.
