20 kings of Sweden

Amanita regalis

here in Norway we call this common mushroom
'brun fluesopp' which translates as brown fly agaric. well, imagine my surprise when i looked up the english name and found it was 'king of Sweden amanita' or at least
'royal fly agaric'.

well they may be kings in the land of our sweet brethren (Sweden) but here they are still regarded as commoners, albeit admittedly rather handsome and at times even stately ones at that . i mean they can't all be kings at the same time, can they? and that is just as well given how many there are of them and the reputation of royal affairs.

i took all the above photos last week where royalty crowned the nearby forest floor and penty were still up and coming.

They look massive. I guess they're poisonous and cause stomach ache and nervous system issues with hallucinations.

they are poisonous but rarely seriously so. i don't know about hallucinations but if there are any it is probably not an enjoyable event being sick and all.

Yeah it basically has the same effect as the amanitas but with a bit more stomach upset. I read there are ways of cooking out the poison.

i know some people eat the Amanita muscaria and seem to have no problem at least in the short term. i am sceptical regarding longer term damage to me it is not worth the risk. this A. regalis is a close relative.

For sure amanitas should only be taken when there is someone watching over you. It causes repetitive motion and convulsions and I know a guy who took them by himself then ended up head butting the floor over and over again thinking he was going into another dimension. The next day his whole face was bruised.
