Fungi Friday

WELCOME 🍄 FUNGI LOVERS

This article for todays Fungi Friday is not about ears for a change, but about bell shaped mushrooms i found next to a busy street in a human made tree slice bed to my surprise. Not just a few that grew there unexpectedly, but a big crowd as if they were planted there on purpose. People were looking strangely, but i had to put down my grocery bags and get close with those fellas and catch some to share with you what my research found out to be a Glistening Inkcap. As always, in case some of you recognizes that fungi and knows better feel free to correct me in the comments.

A little research about the Glistening Inkcap mushroom

Glistening inkcap fungi, also known as Coprinellus micaceus, are these cool mushrooms you can find all over the place—from forests to your backyard. What makes them stand out are their cute little caps covered in shiny, mica-like stuff that sparkles in the sunlight. But here's the wild part: as they grow up, these mushrooms basically turn into a liquid! 👀😁 Yep, their caps dissolve into this black, inky goo, which helps them spread their spores around. Scientists have been digging into these mushrooms and found out they're super important for breaking down dead stuff, like fallen trees, and recycling nutrients back into the soil. Plus, there's some buzz about them having some potential health benefits, like fighting off bacteria and viruses. So next time you spot these glistening inkcaps, just know they're not only fascinating to look at but also doing some serious work in nature.

Here they are signaling that spring is coming, with some lovely purple crocuses forming a sort of face in this photo.

Let‘s take a closer look from the top at the structure of their hats.

Now we‘re getting a bit closer from the side.

Look at how the stem directs the light from above under the hat.

In the last three photos you can see how these little fellas like to grow very close together and in big groups.

FUNGI FACTS:
Some fungi can form symbiotic relationships with plants, known as mycorrhizae, where they exchange nutrients with their host plants, aiding in their growth and health.
