Fungi Friday - Still Stuff Growing

It is winter but there are still some fungi growing for this #fungifriday by @ewkaw

It seems when the snow melts it brings out the bird's nest fungi.

There are many types of bird's nest fungi in the family Nidulariaceae. I'm not sure what this orange type is.

The amber jelly roll can also easily be found on broken branches during winter. I often find this stuff frozen solid. It is edible but bland and tasteless, only good in spicy dishes.

As usual the polypores are always growing. Here is some false turkeytail.

Here is the false turkeytail from the side. You can kind of see the smoother looking underside which helps you differentiate it from true turkeytail.

I suspect this might be some other type of turkeytail lookalike. It was way too tiny to be true turkeytail. Many crust fungi look like this.

Now for a different color of false turkeytail. Fortunately these false turkeytail aren't poisonous so if you are looking for the medicinal turkeytail then you don't have to worry about accidentally harvesting a poisonous mushroom.

You will just end up with a mushroom without the medicinal properties.

The quick way to identify false turkeytail is to see how it curls upward like this. True turkeytail is more rough underneath and more wrinkly and less thin like this.

That's all for now, just a few more months until good mushroom sightings again.

Sort:

I've seen turkeytail or look alikes recently and some jelly roll. Thats about it around here right now. Love the bird's nest. I feel like you have mentioned them before but I don't recall good photos like these.

I might have to take the macro lens out to get some closer shots since all the other mushrooms are so sparce right now. Really tiny guys, if you have any mulch anywhere check those areas for them.

Send me some spores (seeds), I want to plant (and admire) such nests at my location too!
Happy find. 😍 !BEER

I've never tried harvesting the eggs and growing them. Might be worth an experiment.
