Hermaphroditism is the most widely used and popular term to refer to cannabis plants that develop both male and female flowers on the same plant. Technically it is not correct and it is more accurate to speak of monoecious plants instead of hermaphrodites. Cannabis is a dioecious plant, meaning that it has male and female flowers on separate plants. However, on some occasions, cannabis plants can develop both male and female flowers on the same plant, known as monoeciousness. This can be due to several factors:

  • Environmental stress: Sudden changes in temperature, drought, mechanical damage, pests, etc. It is the most common of all.

  • Genetics: Some cannabis strains have a greater predisposition to monoicism due to their genetic makeup.

  • Hormonal regulation: Imbalances in the levels of hormones such as ethylene and abscisic acid can cause the appearance of male flowers.

Dioecious plants: Male and female flowers on separate plants. Cannabis, fig, papaya, pistachio or birch.

Monoecious plants: Male and female flowers separately but on the same plant. Corn, rice, wheat, pumpkin or watermelon.

Hermaphrodite plants: Male and female organs in the same flower. Tomato, potato, apple tree or rose bush.

Most cannabis growers try to quickly identify and eliminate monoecious plants to avoid self-pollination and unwanted seed production because it negatively affects the quality and yield of the crop.

That is precisely what I could not do before with these hermaphrodite (monoecious) plants. I could not cut them earlier because the male flowers appeared at the end of the flowering stage. They are very rare flowers. They are not well formed and have hardly any pollen. The plants were already ready to cut when they appeared. They appeared in only one box and on four out of twelve plants. I'm not going to worry about it for now. We'll see how the next crop goes with the heat stress of summer.

I think I will continue to use the term hermaphrodite rather than monoecious even though it is not quite correct. Have a great day.

OH man that sucks! But that is such a great example of a Herm, for scientific purposes. :)

I believe that the subject of hermaphroditism has been well studied. What is not so studied is the quality of the cannabis seeds that are marketed at a gold price. It is more and more difficult to find good quality regular seeds at reasonable prices, almost impossible. That really deserves a scientific and economic study.

I have got those before.. sometimes they produce seeds other times not.

It's okay though the bud still turns out great

If only a few seeds come out, nothing happens. There are growers who pollinate a part of the plant (regular plants) to make seeds, the other part can be smoked quietly. The problem is when the whole plant is full of seeds because you don't see the male flower until it is too late. Then, the quality and quantity of the buds decreases.
