Improving the foggers in the grow tent

in Canna-Curate9 days ago (edited)

With my outdoor grow wrapped up, I am back to growing inside until next spring. I set up a grow tent in my basement, and hoping we get some really cold nights this winter so my plants can go purple. But for now I am starting some new seedlings, and they need lots of humidity to grow.

With a few successful grows in the tent I have been finding things I can do better and fix inside the tent. One of them is the humidifier setup. This equipment is crucial to seedlings, without high humidity plants that have not formed roots yet have to get their water from the air. I can add lots of humidity to a tent using reptile foggers. But sometimes that much water causes mold to start growing. So I need to find a balance between getting the humidity I need and keeping the fungus at bay. It can live in the soil but needs to not get airborne, as later on that can mess up my flowers.

Normally I just clean the tent good as I see it form, and keeps it at bay for months. But long term I need a better plan.

The big problem with the humidifiers is how they pour the water vapor into the grow tent. It tends to hit the ceiling of the tent and then fall down, towards the fan inside the tent. This causes the vapor to be pulled through the fan, and is making mold grow on the blades of the fan. Not good..

So I needed to find a way to stop the vapor from going in the direction of the fan. As I need this fan to help circulate the air inside the tent and a steady light breeze makes the stems of the plants stronger since it stimulates them.

We can see the dripping of the humid air hitting the ceiling and then coming down the side of the tent, we do not want this. I have very few ways I can move the fogger tubing around. As if I do not keep it mostly straight up water forms in the tubes dips and stops the vapor from coming out.

That is the fan that gets the humid air pulled through, and is growing mold on it. I already took it apart and cleaned it the best I could. But I ordered some new fans just to replace these.

My solution is to move one of my intake fans up on top of the tent, and blow air directly on the fogger nozzles. Blowing the humid air in the opposite direction of where the fan is hopefully the mildew will stop growing.

Honestly its not good to keep fans on ground level of the tent. They get more debris inside them from walking by kicking up dust. So moving it up high I will not need to replace its filters as much.

Opening up the vent hole on top we can see inside.

After removing the 8 inch vent from the bottom tent hole I closed it up. And then moved this fan up top and worked the tubing inside the tent.

Using some paracord I tied the tube to some of the framing inside the grow tent.

Works great, I moved the fan to the other side of the tent. And watching the vapor it now appears not to be pulled into the fan now. Hopefully this will break up the water vapor better and keep the mildew at bay.

I've given up growing indoors, I make sure to get enough from my outdoor each year to get me through. You should try autos outdoors, little chances of mold and problems with a shorter cycle.

I like growing indoors, honestly my outdoor was more mold filled than anything I have ever had in a tent. Once the flower starts the humidity is high enough its not a problem.

Yep I got some autos I am gonna try outdoor next year. Looking forward to trying to get two harvests in a year.

I believe the mold was caused by watering the plants instead of watering the ground and the roots.. but I wasn't there so I really don't know. Just guessing. I do wanna try some autos outside.. but you can't transplant a auto (according to everything I've heard) so indoor they don't get very big before they flower. Outside might be different..

Yeah that sounds about right, hopefully next year I will do better outdoors.

Oh damn well I am going to transplant the autos for sure so we shall see how that plays out. When I transplanted my previous grow they showed zero signs of stress. So maybe you just need to be very careful.

Yeah I'll want to see that.. I've never had good luck with autos

I like to start the outdoor crop in the tent with the first moon in January then move them outside at Mother's Day

Oh nice, thats good to go by. Sounds about what I do.

So cold nights are good for these plants?

It can change the plants chemistry and make them flowers turn purple.

Is that why they call it purple Kush? Lol.

Yup! Not all cannabis strains can go purple. But Indicas tend to more often, and Kushes are mostly indica so that is how that works.

I am growing a strain called Vale Tudo Rd 1:

It has Kimbo Kush and Mendo Purples as its parents, so a good chance it will go purple if I can get the tent cold enough.

I see

yup.. and going purple changes the terpines inside the bud, shifting its flavor and possibly its high.

We used to have some grow chambers at one of our old schools. When that building shut down there was a virtual run on those chambers by some of the staff. It was kind of pathetic! It might have been cool to play with one. I think we still have several kicking around here and there, but they likely never get used anymore.

Yall had grow tents with plants inside at school? That is really cool, great learning experience.

Hah yeah I bet.. employees tend to do that, and the owners.

They used to back in the day. I'm not sure what they ever put in the things. I know what they would want to put in them these days though! They were kind of like this, but much older:

Oh cool.. never seen anything like that. good the kids learned from them.

many know nothing of gardening.

Seeing this, you really invested a lot in farming.😊

Hah this is more of a hobby

Hahaha, you have an amazing hobby.😊😊 You're hitting two birds in one stone. Fun and earning.😊

Excellent work! Love the detail in your post!

Thanks, glad you liked my post.

How great that you are growing indoors again, and that you have all the equipment to do it correctly, especially that you have the necessary knowledge to see things well and make decisions about improvements if necessary.
Excellent work, dear friend @solominer

Ah much appreciated, it is good to be back to growing indoors again.

The idea of moving the fan up and directing the air to the nebulizers sounds very promising. Plus, that will help reduce dust and dirt in the fan. It's a constant learning process, and it sounds like you're going in the right direction to keep your plants healthy and strong. I hope your new seedlings grow beautifully and you get that purple color in winter! 🌱✨

Thank you, hopefully we will get that purple color later on.

Indeed I think it helps to slowly but surely improve on the grow tent.

Never knew humid air is best to grow plants, cant we just place them at the corner of the house wont they grow anyways

This is key for seedlings, plants with established roots do not need humidity as much. But they surely do like it at any stage.

Ohhhh was never thought this in school though yours is full practical

I think your method is very good. It would be much more efficient if it could receive sunlight clearly.

Ah yeah, well its getting too cold outside now to grow. So we must grow with artificial light.

Wow! Today I found out about this way to grow plants 😀😀
Wish you good luck for the good results

Yep, grow tents are great.

thank you

Hello @solominer
The equipment you have for growing cannabis indoors is admirable. I hope that the results you get there are as good as the season you spent outdoors.
Excellent what you have done to improve vaporization

Yep having the right tools for the job really pays off.

Whenever I visit your blog, I learn something new about farming, hopefully the set up works well.

Oh that is great.. glad you learn from my posts.

Wow, that so nice of you, it such a good work, 👍👍👍 you shall have a good result.

It sure was a lot of hard work but well worth it.

You really did a nice work, congratulations

thanks a lot

Damn. Already starting a indoor crop. Sir I believe you may out do me in the stoner department

Yup! No breaks here.. got a lot of catching up to do with all the years I stopped growing. lol

I want to know the next process about indoor cannabis plants, I think to set up the moisture pattern that is directly related to the indoor cannabis plants is a little complicated, which I will definitely look forward to good results for your indoor cannabis plants.
Hopefully there will be no obstacles in overcoming it.

Once the plants get bigger and out of their seedling phase I can reduce the humidity. At that point I will start "topping" the plant. Reforming its shape so it will grow extra wide and not as tall.

Then we wait until its big enough to flower, I change the light color and timing and they start budding.
