What Happens When AI Meets Law Enforcement?
This Writing Was Inspired By An Ugly Event That Took Place A Few Days Ago, Involving Police Brutality.
It was Monday morning, and everywhere was deserted. Nobody was selling or hawking by the roadside. Only a few people were on the street, going about their business, when a police Hilux van arrived. Some policemen chased after a group of people they identified as tax collectors. In such a scenario, everyone would run for their dear lives to avoid getting into trouble, but someone must always be the scapegoat. There was a guy who saw the chaos and hid himself. He thought to himself, "Since the police are after tax collectors and I’m not one, I’m free to go about my business". As soon as he came out, the police surrounded him and arrested him. They confiscated his phones and any means of communication. He was detained, and for three days, nobody knew his whereabouts. This is the kind of thing we often experience in Nigeria. It was on the fourth day that his family received a call from him. He only managed to tell them where he was before the line went dead. The family had to hire a lawyer, and the rest is history.
There is a common saying in Nigeria that "the police is your friend." But I ask, is the police really your friend?
The police are supposed to play a vital role in maintaining law and order in a state. With the aid of community vigilante groups, they are to ensure public safety and enforce the laws of the land. They are always found patrolling the streets and neighborhoods with the aim of preventing crimes before they happen, but is that what they are actually doing or are they creating chaos?
I think the latter is the answer. Some months ago, I was traveling from Anambra to Abia state, and on the way, something horrible happened. It was at a police checkpoint. The police officer was collecting 200 naira from vehicle drivers. The next vehicle in front of me refused to comply, and the officer used his rifle to hit the vehicle’s windshield, shattering it.
All these and more are happening in Nigeria right now.
How do we achieve a state free from corruption and police brutality? This led me to think technology-wise. Recently, it has been making headlines that AI is replacing human jobs, and one sector I would really love to see AI involved in is the police sector.
Imagine a world where Robot-Corp is used for enforcing law and order in a state, ensuring public safety. AI is ten times faster in thinking compared to humans, it has no emotion, its sole purpose is to deliver the work it was programmed for. It can be a great aid in investigations.
A few days ago, I watched on YouTube what the Chinese developed to aid in police patrol.
You Need To See This
Taking a look at it, it looks like a round ball wyirwtreh its body shielded, am sure it's designed to be bulletproof making it suitable to operate in combat zone. It is also self controlled apart from manual control and it takes pictures 360 degrees as it roles.
What an advanced technology China has produced.
