I used to be that girl that will always call on any emergency and if I do not get a response I will rest. All that changed when I had Satan's apprentice for a boss (supervisor). Initially, I was never the texting type especially in emergency situations.
I have always thought that If I can't reach the person via call at that pressing moment, is it now with a text message that the person will be available? Again, my logic then was, the time the person would use to reply to my text, they might as well use it to return my calls.
Going forward, I learned the hard way and understood the importance of texting at the time my boss tried using me as the fall guy for his shady and questionable dealings. He started by trying to get me to send him some money from the office fund that was in my custody. He would call me randomly and say it's pressing, that he's financially stranded and I should send him some funds from the office imprest. He tried that on several occasions and when he saw that I was on to him, because I always tell him that we are out of funds and yet to be replenished, he showed his true nature.
My supervisor started to paint me black to our MD. He accused me of theft and being wasteful with funds. He claimed that my official transactions in the past had no receipts to show and for that reason, he moved the imprest from my custody to that of the senior admin officer so he would checkmate my financial dealings.
The senior admin officer was then instructed not to release any fund to me without the approval of my supervisor. It should be worth noting that during this period, I saw hell and was really frustrated.
We would have tasks to execute but the senior admin officer would refuse to release funds. When he finally releases the fund, it will not be enough to get the task done. My supervisor did not stop there, without ascertaining the feasibility of his changes, he changed the work routine and made it very cumbersome.
Jobs that would take me a maximum of 5 to 6 hours to execute, started lingering for days. When I made attempts to communicate to my supervisor about my difficulties on the job, he accused me of insubordination and reported me to the MD who asked that I face the disciplinary committee.
I finally felt an opportunity for my voice to be heard. During the trial, I poured out my heart on all the rigors and sabotage I was made to go through. After listening to both sides, the panel asked that I put my complaint in writing, which I did.
Later on, after thinking that the whole issue had been sorted, my salary came, and it was slashed by almost 50%.
To say I got mad was an understatement. I immediately called the account department to demand reasons why I wasn't paid in full, and they told me it was directives from above, that I am being punished for insubordination.
My spirit fell and I became downcast. I didn't even know which was more frustrating, being taken for a fool, appearing before the disciplinary committee, pouring out my heart or the time I spent writing a statement that wasn't even considered….
You see that period was a trying time for me as I struggled to feed for the next month. I started hitching a ride with some of my colleagues' home to cut costs. On one of those rides, I complained bitterly on how unfair my bosses were to me. One of my colleagues then asked me a simple question, if I had any proof of all what I complained about my supervisor during my trial with the disciplinary committee.
I was dumbfounded because I thought my words were enough. My ignorance made my colleagues laugh at me, while sympathizing with me at the same time. It was then they advised me to always think smart and be a step ahead by communicating via text messages instead of calls.
According to them, if I had attached some proof of our conversation via text messages to the writing I had tendered, the panel would have reconsidered their decision on punishing me by slashing my salary. Immediately I learnt and I cultivated the habit of texting.
Moving on, I realized that sometimes, people might be indisposed to pick up calls. At that point, texting becomes the fastest, surest and most reliable way to reach them especially during emergencies.

Ouch! Too sad you have to learn the hard way. But I like the lesson you got to learn from all of these. Texting is always better in terms of being reliable. Humans are not to be completely trusted, they will say one thing and the next moment when you ask them, they will deny it all. But with evidence, they can’t deny it. Even if they try, they can only go so far.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us, mama. I have also learned too.
Omo eh!!! Given my life experiences, I fear who nor fear human beings o... Anyway I'm happy you learned something at least.... That will be 20HBD ma'am 🙂.
That’s crazy. I think I should start recording my boss’ calls now. Just for the future reference o.
My dear, if you mind him mischievous, take no chances. Record that call.

I don't like to receive calls at all, unless they are from close family. I find calls intrusive most times. Text and email (preferably email) are the best way. Not only do these take less time to process, but they allow me to read or respond at a convenient time. That's especially true for email. A text might require a more timely response.
Plus, as your friends wisely advise, when it's in writing there is not doubt about intention, or what has been said.
I hope your salary has bounced back :)
