TV ORDEALS

Growing up, I was first introduced to the black and white TV that was in transition at that time. I lived with some relatives alongside my mum then and they had this TV that covered a big part of the sitting room. As a child I would wonder why it had to be that big and was curious to want to take a look because there was an opening around the corner. I often thought that if I entered inside the TV would show me on the screen but never dared to do so because we were given strict instructions not to go around that area. We weren't even allowed in the sitting room unless it was night and would only enter the house through the backyard entrance. But I was still so little then and would only do as I was told and what the other kids did as well.

We will sit on the floor at night far away from the TV while the adults use the sitting room sofas. The only person that was allowed to go close to the TV then was my uncle who had a special chair close to the TV. But that's all I can remember with the black and white TV as I was only as little as 3 to 4 years old then. I didn't really know why they had such rules then but thinking about it now it's probably because children can be curious and might spoil something if they go close. I think I remember a time when some of the bigger kids were severely punished with 25 strokes of the cane for spoiling something. I think it was TV related because the picture in my memory was the faces of one of the kids who was my uncle's son as his father whooped his ass and back until others were begging him to stop and my uncle was shouting “do you know how expensive this is?” I was there not wanting to ever be in his shoes 😂.

As I grew older I became exposed to the coloured TV which only displayed news and a TV series named “Super story and papa Ajasco”. But my most memorable of all my TV experiences was the time my sister broke my head because she wanted to watch cartoons. This was when Plasma TV just came on board and Decoders were very rampant. I loved watching wrestling and my sister prefered her cartoons. So we decided to share it with each of us having 30 minutes to watch what we wanted. By the time my 30 minutes was elapsing, it was in the middle of a very interesting match and I pleaded with my sister to allow me finish it while I kept holding on to the remote. She didn't listen and would always want to show she could beat me because I didn't really fight back whenever she did that.

After all her advances to hit me looked like they weren't working, the next thing I saw was a stick hitting my head. Although the pain was unbearable, My mum wasn't around and thus I decided to let things slide finally giving her the chance to use the remote. When my mum returned to see my head and I explained everything that happened, she made a decision that surprised even me by telling us to fight. By the way my sister was really big then and I am four years older so I was way taller even then. She was happy with the fight and for me I just gathered all the anger I felt for all the times I had to hold back on hitting her and unleashed on her which made her fall sick the next day 😂.
