Growing up, I wasn’t really the kid that likes screens. Unlike my siblings who always wanted to be in-front of the Tv or computer all the time doing God knows what , I was always buried in different kinds of books. I literally had a whole library in my room. But, that didn’t stop me from having my favourite shows though.
One reason I didn’t like screens as a child was because of my sister and brother. Anytime we were to watch Tv, my brother would say he wanted to see an action movie and my sister on the other hand wanted Nigerian movies. In that moment, I was required to pick a side to make it 2 against 1. God knows I hated Nigerian drama cos of all the witchcraft and scary scenes then but in such situations, I just left them to it and made my way to my books.
But, as a grew up, I got to a point where I had some specific shows I always made sure to watch. At around Junior high and senior high school, I was always in a hurry to get back home from school to watch Grachi and Carrosel. Then, a few years later, we had some Indian shows like Veera and co which were being translated into our local dialect. With these ones, it was more like I was influenced to see them.
We had about 3 televisions at home but everyone wanted to use the big one in the hall.It wasn’t a black and white TV and it was better than the one in our second hall which always needed it’s antenna to be adjusted all the time.😂 To use that Tv ,would have to climb a ladder just to get the channels working well and no one wanted to go through that stress.
But, that wasn’t the highlight of my television life as a child. My highlight then was when my brother and sister were on with their usual banter one particular day, fighting over what to watch and the remote. The fight was leading nowhere so one party decided to stand in-front of the Tv to prevent the other from watching their show. It led to a fight and guess what? They broke the Tv.😂
After the harm had been caused, they all sat quietly waiting for our dad to come and render judgement. At the end of the day guess who took the blame? Me. I was blamed for not telling them to pick up their books to read. Funny right? yeah. This day still lives rent free in my mind because who would have thought that our Tv would get spoilt in a situation like this. That was actually the last time I heard anyone fight over a remote or what channel to watch at home. Now, we have so many televisions but no time to watch them. That’s life for you.
What’s your childhood Tv story?
