A little coffee for the truth

"Hello, Justin, you finally woke up," spoke a man in a white coat, white hair, and bags under his eyes.

"What, a doctor, am I in a hospital, what happened?" I asked as I tried to get up with a slight headache.

"Don't get up yet, please! You're still getting the painkillers. You suffered a strong concussion to the head, it's not serious at all, but I recommend you continue to rest."

"What happened to me, I don't remember anything!"

"An irresponsible driver hit you while you were on the sidewalk, then ran away without caring what happened to you," the doctor explained while checking my eyes with a flashlight. "Good thing it didn't happen."

I nodded and sighed, and began to have a faint recollection of the event.

"By tomorrow I'll be able to discharge you and you can leave," the doctor said soothing my heart.

"Thank you very much, doctor."

The next day, I left the hospital and decided to walk home. I took the route through downtown and passed a coffee shop. I was craving a delicious coffee with cream and cinnamon powder on top, so I decided to go in and buy a thermos.

On my way out, as I was enjoying my rejuvenating drink, I heard a hissing sound getting louder by the minute. I looked all around and no one was there, I forgot about it and continued on my way.

"Hey, buddy, look at me, turn around, I'm talking to you!" Insisted the voice. I turned around and to my surprise I saw only a small poodle, with bulging, dark eyes like a void without light, and a smile with small teeth very unusual in dogs of that breed.

"You're talking to me?" I asked with wild eyes.

"That's right, buddy, I'm a talking mutt and I don't excel at answering many repetitive questions. I recognized you right away, you're the man who got run over near here a few days ago. I witnessed everything that happened, and I can tell you who did it."

He started to give me a headache again, I was stunned, somewhat confused, and then I was overcome with curiosity, I just thought this could be the effect of the drugs.

"No, it's not an effect of anything, I really can talk to you telepathically," the dog asserted.

"Can you read my mind?"

"Well, it seems I can only do that with you so far, apparently that blow you took to your head increased your psychic activities."

I immediately took a huge sip of coffee to corroborate that I wasn't dreaming. I thought I had gone crazy and should go back to the hospital.

"If you go back to the hospital they will most likely do experiments on you, who knows where they will take you next," he warned me in a serious voice.

I pondered for several minutes at that argument.

"Then I'm just left to continue with this weird game," I stated, as I took another massive sip from my thermos.

"Hey, hey, don't finish it all! I'm here to provide you with valuable information in exchange for several gulps of coffee."

"You want coffee?"

"Of course, who wouldn't want some? I'm always around this coffee shop waiting for someone to give me a cream-filled bagel or a half-eaten croissant, but no one wants to give me coffee because I'm a dog, but with you, I get a chance to try it. So, shall we make the deal?"

It seemed very strange to make a deal with a talking dog, but if he knew who had run over me and then run away like it was nothing, I had no choice but to accept.

I gave him the rest of the coffee I had left, when I finished, he licked his lips and nose and threw his head back complacently squinting his eyes.

"It's delicious! You have good taste!" the dog asserted as he wagged his tail frantically.

"Thank you, now tell me who ran me over."

"Follow me, he doesn't live very far, it's down Lovers Street."

Arriving at that place, we found the car in front of a red house.

"There he is," the dog pointed with his muzzle. "You should take a picture of it so we can file a report."

"Wait, this is Steve's car, my co-worker!" I felt a lump in my throat as the door of the house in front of the car opened, and out came Steve and my girlfriend Lorain. They gave each other a hasty kiss on the lips to say goodbye."

"Lorain!" I vociferated, now I understood why she didn't come to visit me in the hospital.

"Justin?" She blurted out with huge eyes like saucers.

"Justin!" Steve exclaimed, his shocked face mimicking Lorain's.

We all froze as if in an interrupted timeline, as the dog looked all around; bobbing his head from side to side like a puppet.

"Oh, shit!" manifested the poodle. "And I thought having coffee was the best thing that happened to me today," he grins cheekily.

Oh shit, it had to be your co-worker who was interested in your girl.

Ha ha ha, it was an unfortunate surprise.
