I was only fifteen when my twin sister disappeared, no one had an idea about her whereabouts.
On the 15th of May, Kaira and I got into a fight. I took it to heart and avoided her in all possible ways.
I don't know what got into my head that fateful day, cause I remembered her apologizing and handing me a note. But I was too pissed to let go and too angry to look into her eyes to see that those were truly heartfelt apologies. I couldn't even open the note she handed me, cause I wanted to completely dilute what my eyes had seen earlier that day in school.
Earlier that day, I'd walked up on my sister and Maxwell kissing in an empty classroom. This was the same Maxwell that bullied me so much in school. But how she suddenly moved past that incident and then mutated into locking lips with him rendered me dumbstruck.
At that moment I was consumed by fierce rage, nothing ever mattered to me, not even the note in my hand, 'cause I'd cast it away. I wish I never did, cause that was the last time I ever saw her.
Fifteen more years had passed, and I was already thirty. Life was easy for me, yet unsatisfying. The thought of my missing twin sister kept my heart relentlessly shattered.
Another 15th May of the year had arrived, and I'd taken it upon myself as always to stay at home. This day was a heartbreaking reminder.
Then there was a knock at the door. "Who's it?" I inquired.
"It's Laura!"
"Come in, the door is open," I pitched.
"Wow! I want to hear that you're done sulking, 'cause I won't let you keep doing this," Laura uttered.
"I wish I could, but it's hard. I don't even have the vaguest idea if she's dead or alive. It's been fifteen years now," I wept.
"Alright! Let's not do this again. Look, I came here with something that could take you back to those indelible childhood memories you hold so dear. It's a coffee that allows you to recall childhood memories."
"A coffee can do that?" I asked aghast. "I'd like a cup of this coffee, please."
Five minutes later, Laura was out holding a cup of coffee in her hand.
Right there, I consumed everything, eagerly lingering for the moment to sleep into a trance.
Gradually, I felt a shift in my subconsciousness. It was soothing and peaceful. It was as if the world around me faded. Unhindered by external distractions, a calm euphoria settled over me. I began to see people that made my childhood fun, I saw KAIRA.
The best, sweetest, and most fun times together with Kaira played before me, and a surge of excitement enveloped me. Oddly, I saw Kaira walking into the classroom alone in tears. Then she grabbed a pen and paper and began to write. I had no idea what she was writing about until I walked closer and read between the lines.
"Dear Kayla, I'm deeply sorry for the act I indulged in today. I just didn't know how to tell you that Maxwell and I had fallen in love. I should have done better, I should have confided in you, I just didn't know how you'd react to it. There's something else you deserve to know, I have Cancer and have fifteen months to live. I found out about this from the doctor the day I slumped in school and was rushed to the hospital. There's something else. I'm pregnant, and I don't regret it. Yeah, Maxwell is responsible. I know you may think I've failed our late parent, but I want you to know that keeping this baby brings me happiness. I'm going to be away till the baby is born, and I'm truly sorry for all the things I've hidden from you. Please, Kayla, take good care of my child for me when I'm gone. I LOVE YOU! And hey, call this number if you want to get to me: 08066871682.
Almost immediately, I felt water splashed on me and a hand pulling me out. "Kayla, please open your eyes," Laura cried out. And instantly, I opened my eyes in utter shock gasping for breath. I was too broken, and I began to weep.
Then I quickly grabbed my phone and dialed the number. It rang until someone answered.
"Hello, please am I speaking with Maxwell?" I asked
"Yes, you are," he responded.
"This is Kayla, Kyler's sister." I could figure he was shocked and speechless. So I begged to see him, and he agreed and sent me his address.
A few minutes later, I arrived at Max's. I needed strength and courage to pull through, so I nervously knocked, a voice within instructed me to come in. Maxwell was right there in his living room as I walked in, so much had changed around him.
I didn't know how to tell him about the coffee that led me to him, but I'd explained to him how shattered I'd been all these years, flooding his ears with so many apologies.
"We'd forgiven you a long time ago."
"Thank you so much. Please, can I get to see her child?"

Instantly, the door was pushed open, and two girls made their way in, as they happily jumped on Maxwell.
"These are my kids, your sister's children."
Then it dawned on me that my sister had given birth to twins too, just like us. What took me aback was their uncanny resemblance to us when we were their age, and they were fifteen. This was beyond magical.
"What are their names?" I asked.
"Kayla and Kaira," he responded. I couldn't hold back the tears, this was so emotional.
"Can I request to be their mom?"
"That has always been your sister's wish."
And never again did I ever let go. The peace I longed for enveloped my soul thereafter.
Life works in mysterious ways, doesn't it? Sometimes, the hardest moments lead us to the most incredible discoveries. Your sister's love and wishes shine through you and her beautiful children.
It's amazing that this coffee could reunite you with your nieces and heal some small part of the terrible situation that occurred. It's sad to think of her leaving to be sick alone, but perhaps that made it easier for her. Thanks for the interesting read 😁
